| They're being sued for copyright violation. They don't pay for the usage of the content they rebroadcast. The outcome of that case will have a profound effect on intellectual property laws, I believe.
ETA: The Supreme Court is hearing the case now. |

I can't wait to see how IP laws handle the coming tidal wave of knock-offs of physical items, not just digital movies and books. This will happen once reality capture software (e.g., Photosynth, Catch and Recap) and 3D printers are household items. Won't just be the Chinese copying everything in sight. |

| Free TV has always been around. A few years ago, when the system was switched from analog to digital, stations were required to make viewers aware of how to continue getting the basic channels through a simple converter, which has been available ever since. They can be purchased for a one-time fee from most businesses that deal with TV's. |

What does this have to do with a company that takes licensed content off the airwaves and sells it to paying consumers? (despite Joe's OP, Aereo is NOT "free TV." They have a free trial, which he probably misunderstood). TV has never been "free" either, it may be provided free to viewers, but it is subsidized by advertisers. |

Which was the system we lived with from the early days of television until cable and "pay TV" which was supposed to be "ad free," but wasn't. More words that in and of themselves mean nothing. |

| On a tangent, the WSJ has all kinds of ads on its website now, some pop-up, which pisses me off no end, as a paying subscriber (and their subscriptions ain't cheap). |
