| If your sole source of income is Social Security, it is not a laughing matter. Many have their Social Security supplemented by other sources of income and can make quips that sound funny. They are not the norm, but make the news. |

| Not getting an increase is equivalent to taking a cut when the CPI goes up. Poor people are hit hardest, of course. A loaf of bread costs the same irrespective of your income. So, the degree to which such changes affect people is in direct proportion to their financial situation. And those hit hardest cannot usually contribute to campaign finances. So their chance of getting equal representation is next to zero.
All this will change when the national median age rises to the point where seniors have become a voting block to be reckoned with.
The article unfairly quotes those whose sacrifices are trivial. If this article had been written in one of these counties instead of Boca Raton, it would have a different perspective and would elicit different reactions. |

| No way could my hubby and I survive on SS benefits. I agree with Joe. If we can afford war, we can afford to pay Seniors. |

| What are those people buying? Not much. They don't have the money. But they still need food, clothing, medicine, fuel oil or coal, a way to get to the stores. Many families have to live on the Social Security collected by their elders. It was supposed to work the other way. But the jobs went away. Next to nothing? It's a long way from nothing to next to nothing when nothing is all you have. I think you have to have been poor at some time in your life to appreciate that. |

We can't afford these wars. They've been put on the payment plan. This We'll be paying them off for the next 30 years. - Quote :

Are most SS recipients poor? I don't think so. |

| 10/12/2010 Abe.. LC lives on another planet all by herself !, she has no idea what it's like to be a senior, I know many who had money at one time and their savings has dwindle to half or less and they rely on social security, I for one worked for 45 years, and yes LC I deserved it, I paid into it and Yes I deserve a large increase 5% or more, they didn't give one for 2010 and none for next year, I say slash the plolitician's salarys make them live like everyone else... So LC you will loose this battle there are too many seniors against you , repent, say your sorry for such stupid remarks, you have no idea what it's like to be a senior.... Joe |

Do you have data? Even if most are not, how about many? How many does it take? |

| Most seniors receive Social Security -if you worked 40 quarters (which isn't that much) you receive it! So are most or many of America's citizens poor? As for the theoretical question, "how many does it take," what's your point? Most working people don't get automatic raises every year; I sure don't. In fact, we take cuts when things are bad. I don't know why seniors are so sacrosanct that nothing that affects them should ever be considered.
Re your comment that things will change when seniors are a big enough voting block -aren't they already? I have friends in Florida who say the schools are so bad there because retirees vote down every bond issue to improve them. |

Florida is a bad example because so many retirees (mostly affluent) have relocated here. It isn't a good cross section of retirees. That's why I pointed the discussion away from Boca Raton and to the less well-to-do parts of the country for a look at how the "other half" lives. (Listening to retirees in Boca Raton bitch about Social Security is like the baseball players' strike of '94.) The baby boomers are just beginning to hit 65. Over the next fifteen years as the bulk of that generation (75 million, give or take a million) hits retirement age, the emphasis of legislation will shift to favor the requirements of seniors. Can't be avoided. Today, most folks over 65 rely on SS for half or more of their income. Are they poor? If you have to live on SS x 2 or less, I think you are poor. |

At any rate, their SS isn't being cut. They're just not getting an increase. Big difference, and so what? They've been traveling and buying booze up until now, why will the lack of an increase one year impact this? I hope they're aware that many of the people paying into the SS fund don't have jobs at all. LC Please, be advised if you don't have a job, you are not paying into the SS fund. It is a payroll tax deduction. |

To clarify -a large segment of the population that the whining seniors need to finance their SS is currently unemployed. - Quote :

I agree. I would also ask why "most folks over 65" are in this position (if indeed they are). |
