Shelagh, I would hope so.  They had to do something positive and they at one time did.  That is why I was a Republican.  I believed in them.  When they changed, I changed.

I liked the good ole days when the old line politicians were liberally spread among all parties, depending on who paid their campaign bills.

I liked it when both parties included liberals, conservatives and middle of the roaders.  That way those with similar interests in both parties could collaborate.

All this division down the line nonsense makes government by the people difficult.

I agree, DK. When the views of two sides are diametrically opposed, both sides cannot be right ... but both sides can be wrong.

Agree DK.  Including all sides in government means all citizens are represented.
We may hear extreme views by both parties.  That may seem negative and get reaction, however there is a positive side.  It can cause one to think more about the issues as well as learning the thoughts of others. 
On this forum we get to hear/read the views of others.  Some come across as extreme, but it does get ones attention.  Reponses tend to bring balance to the issues and balance is what we seek.

If you believe that muslims do not have a desire to enforce their ways on America, think again! 

Trying and succeeding are two different things.  No religious holidays would be best for all, however if you give it to one sect, why not to all? Anything proposed at the eleventh hour is improper.  If it is to be considered, it should take a prescribed path.  Newcomers must learn how change is accomplished where they live.  Old tactics of force won't work and we cannot afford to set precedents.

As for holidays in general.  Most companies set aside a number of holidays for the year.  They will use the mandated Federal holidays and then offer several other days as optional holidays.  Either the company decides what these optional days will be or they let the employees decide.  For most, a holiday means a day off from work and it doesn’t matter if it is deemed a religious holiday.  Planning for the days off is critical for any company or service organization.  Patients don’t stop being sick on a designated holiday nor to accidents stop happening.  Nurses, Doctors, Firemen and Police must work.  Who will work on the holiday takes advance planning.  As indicated with the school, parents must plan who will take care of the children if they are working.  Last minute changes create havoc for all concerned.  Anyone new to a society are much like children and must be taught.  Providing a reasonable explanation instead of a flat “No” can alleviate much of the dissent.

Probably not, but many have entered without becoming naturalized citizens. The Constitution's restriction is on naturalization not entry. Trump wants to restrict entry, apparently even for USA citizens who are also Muslims. According to him, Mohammed Ali, Kareem Abdul Jabar,  and many others would not be allowed back in once they took a trip outside the country. He's just blowing smoke, pandering to the biases of his constituency. He's too smart to actually believe that line of nonsense he's selling.

If it is such a foregone conclusion, why is everyone so uptight about Donald Trump?

This morning CNN is full of debate about the debate.  They are discussing who did what?  Who scored points?  Who lost?  The Democrats can go to school on the GOP's debate.  Hopefully it won't be another circus.

Predictions and Polls tend to influence people.  Many people want to say that they voted for the winner.  A track record of being right with predictions is not something easy to ignore.  Based on the latest GOP debate, I suspect the Democrates chance for success has improved.  We don't know how the Democratic debates will fare, but I think they're smart enough not to repeat the errors made by the GOP. 

Meanwhile, with all the negative rhetoric, the US economy is improving, the Fed indicates that it may raise interest rates causing the stockmarkets to rise and there is an International coalition to fight ISIS that includes Arab countries. In addition, the world body came together to fight climate change. By the time the election comes around the world situation may be such that people don't want to change a success formula in progress.
