June 18, 2014 The Music of Language Words Are Energy by Madisyn Taylor
Each word we speak has a life of its own, a vibratory signature that creates waves into the expanse of the universe.
When we speak or write, we use the vehicles of words to carry meaning, as well as energy, from ourselves to another person or group of people. We may be speaking to our baby, our boss, or to an audience of 500 people. We may be writing a love letter, a work-related memo, or an entry in our own diary. Whatever the case, each word we speak or write has a life of its own, a vibratory signature that creates waves in the same way that a note of music creates waves. And like musical notes, our words live in communities of other words and change in relation to the words that surround them. When we are conscious of the energy behind our words, we become capable of making beautiful music in the world. If we are unconscious of the power of words, we run the risk of creating a noisy disturbance......

| Reading a lot - and I mean a lot - of the material where words are treasured helps build our own vocabulary. In recent years, my reading has been limited to those novels I review - and most are plot-driven where the words are just not valued. |

| Kind of a shame. When novels are character-driven, the words those characters use become more important, it seems to me. |

| Well, they claim to be "character driven" as they are generally part of a mystery or murder series of books where the same characters appear and are favorites for the readers. However, each book has a "plot" that drives everything else. Characters are shadow people without histories or futures. Today's editors consider backstories a waste. Everything must be in the present or obviously relevant. |

| If you read without noticing the words, grammar structure, voice or cadence, you are reading the work of a skilled writer. If you stumble and have difficulty making sense of sentences (no pun intended!) then the writer has yet to master his craft. Musicians, actors, entertainers, sportsmen and women, who perform with effortless prowess, have worked hard to make their performance look easy. When we try to replicate their skill, we soon appreciate the extent to which they have mastered the art of making something that is difficult look easy. Unfortunately, we seem to be blind when it comes to assessing our own writing skills. |

| I was thinking about this very thing while reading The Wind In The Willows. When Mole and Rat are trudging through the snow and Mole gets a whiff of his old home. His torment and longing for his old home and how Rat responds is one of the best parts of this story. I wish that I could write with that kind of empathy. Love,
Betty |

| I see they have 200 "emojis" (emoticons). Sort of reminds me of Chinese pictographs. I hope the English language holds on in spite of texting. |

| I am happy Today, the sun warms the earth and awakens the flowers, holding the world in its arms. My heart overflows with joy as I contemplate the arrival of a friend and her children. |

| I took a true event and showed it first with an emoticon. Then I wrote two happy sentences. An emoticon does not express sufficiently the joy of helping two precious boys putting together wood kits. I love it when they come to visit. Don't the little ones take you out of yourself and into their in the moment world? |

| They, kids, never fail to make me happy. Kids make the world go round. I won't say they are awesome, because that is a much overworked word in my opinion. They are akin to that however. |

| They see things as they are. A few quotes from the visit:
"This car is sure clean. Is it new?" Car is 2009. Their car is a "family car."
We were supposed to go swimming at the community pool. The sign said, "Broken by lightning. Closed until further notice."
"I never heard of lightning closing the pool. They must have run out of money." |
