| Ah, my friend Joe, it won't all be fine. There are always those with much to say that spreads venom instead of tolerance, compassion and caring. We can be lights, though, in our own little worlds and not tolerate bias in our friends and acquaintances.
I just toured a holocaust museum. It was clear that not speaking out against bigotry allowed the atrocities to occur. When good people keep quiet, the noisy ones win. |

| As much as some bash Sharpton and Jackson. Without the attention they brought to this case we would not be having a national discussion of what I feel are horrible laws. |

| 7/19/2013 Evidently everyone forgets the scandal Al Sharpton created 30 years ago Tawana Brawley which turned out to be not true and ruined a man's life.....This country from what I see will always be divided maybe in another 100 years people will learn to get along ? Cheers..Joe... |

| Squeaky wheels are not always perfect, but they do get attention and sometimes it's the only way. The hope is that more good is derived from imperfect leaders than mistakes. |

| No one forgot about Tawana Brawley and I knew she would be brought up. The fact is that Tawana Brawley simply lied about what happen to her and by the time it was discovered that she made the whole thing up, it was too late. Many have been hurt and killed over the years , because someone lied about what someone else did. Fourteen year old Emmit Till was killed because a woman said he made a pass at her. |

| Lying is problematic. Al Sharpton should not be blamed for Tawana's lies. |

| 7/20/2013 Here's a case of a young black man in Mississippi who came back to his hometown tried to run for mayor ( he was gay) they claim that another young black man killed him, I think there's more to this story , I believe he came across corruption in his town, he was murdered , read on, this hasn't gotten the attention it deserves ! http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/20/us/mississippi-murder-mystery/index.html?hpt=hp_c4 Cheers...Joe... |

| I meant to add - children have to be taught that differences are a problem. They start out life just noticing differences without judgment. Only when they are given reasons through someone else's behavior or the lessons by adults in their lives do they become aware that differences contain negative connotations. |

| 7/20/2013 DK... Children don't know color, it's the adults who point this out. When I was growing up I never looked at my step-dad as being black, matter of fact many people got confused because I always called him Dad, they would look at him and then me, whenever his relatives came over I would be excited because I knew we would have a great time, I adored two of them Aunt Hazel and Aunt Alama, I still miss them. Adults have to learn not to point out the person, by color, religion or sexual persuasion , then again people grow up with prejuidice.... Cheers..Joe... |

| 7/20/2013 Alice.. Thank You ! I don't know of any man who would marry a woman with five small children, be kind, always taking us boys fishing on a Sat., talking about his time in WW 11 with stories that would make you laugh and make you cry. Christmas was like Macy's dept. store, he always made sure our wishes came true but he and my Mother made it understood you didn't always get what you wanted unlike todays kids who have everything before their 15 .......I miss them both , fond memories, I'm babbling on... Cheers..Joe.. |

| 7/20/2013 In reading all this about Trevan Martin , my memorie keeps going back in time ! I remember I use to meet my father's cousin Hazel at the bus stop ( I was crazy about her, she was in her 50's.) We would walk back from the bus stop and I remember a black guy passed us and gave us a dirty look, I remembered I was annoyed and yelled: " What's the matter, you've never seen a white boy with a lady of color ? " She pulled my arm and told me to shut up before he came after me. As you notice I said lady of color, I didn't know in those days any words that pertained to a Negro or black person. I remember one time my father took me with him to his daughters house ( He was married once before,) and it was a brownstone with steps that go upstairs but we were downstairs in front of his daughter's apt. two black ladies were at the top and one of them kept staring at my father and yelled : " Hey N what are you doing with that white boy ?" He in turn answered: " He's my son ! What is it to you !" She yells back: " What's the matter N you can't marry your own kind , or your own kind doesn't want you !" With that he took my hand and we were out of there, he made a smart move it was two against one and he never hit a lady ... Cheers..Joe..

| Joe, You make me cry.
I remember being the "white trash" that lived in the black neighborhood in the end of the 40's. I remember the smell of the trash burning on weekends. I remember the weeds that grew around our house and the clean yards of the black people over the road. They had a few flowers growing. I was free to roam where I would at 4 or 5. I know it was before I went to school.
One day, I walked by a house with a small screened porch. A black lady sat there by a table. I looked at her. She said, "Honey, are you hungry." I said that I was. She invited me into her porch and sat me in a chair. She dipped a hard bread roll into a bowl of melted butter and then into a pot of honey. It was the best thing I had ever eaten. That incident colored my world for life.
Years later, after the adoption by the Anderson family, I got my first job in Snow's Inn. It was the end of the year 1959. Black people still had to drink from other fountains, could not go to a cafe that was owned by white people and be served. (Drunks that peed on the floor after the bar closed were welcomed). A young black couple came in to be served. Ms. Snow told me to tell them they would not be served in her cafe. I could not do it then...I could not do it ever. She had to go and tell them that her own lilly white self. I quit.
No matter what color a person's skin was in those days, if it was not white, that person had fewer opportunities in this "land of the free" than white people. It has not changed a great deal here in Florida...and not just the south and not just black people. White people who have the power and the money are afraid of the enormous and diversely colored population that is getting to voting age here in this small part of the world. I am sorry about that. Changing the ambiance of the earth is a one on one venture. It is each of us that has to do our lone part and once it is accomplised (not in my lifetime, I doubt) our lone part of believing that we are all one people, one human race that inhabits and is responsible for the earth and each other...only then will there be peace on earth. It is a long time comming.
Love, Betty |

| Betty and Joe, you both made me cry. There is so much potential compassion and caring among people and yet the hatred and ugliness remains. Progress occurs among the young, but it is an evolutionary progress that takes time because they must overcome the remains of the previous generations. During the wasted time, so many people experience thwarted opportunities and fall into beliefs that do not create harmony. |

| Just saw a comment on FB. It said that Obama's word changes. Last year he said he was 50, and this year he says he is 51. So what is it? |
