| When you think about it, it helps the publishers to avoid some of their costs, to be able to find potentially money-making projects without much expense.

| And the authors are promoting it (which, imo, is one of the main things that makes a publisher a publisher). |

| Hello, I'm new here. This story coincides with what I have been hearing and reading about in the last week. Writers made posts on their blogs describing how they got their book, or even short story, listed on Amazon. A critical issue a number of writers discussed was the price of the novel on Kindle. Most of them sold/sell their novels on Kindle for $2.99. There is clearly a price point below which readers are more inclined to purchase a novel. One writer stated that he on his first novel on Amazon and "gave" it away for free. |

| Actually, I wonder why small presses have not taken that approach. Look at the continuous ranking over time of a Kindle or Smashwords ebook then approach the author with a contract for a print book and ebook with the small press. They wouldn't have to read a bunch of submissions; the reading audience vets the potential books for them. |
