I say this country will be taxed to death...
It won't work.......

The phrase being taxed to death has been used often in the past. That's a convenient phrase used for political purposes.
The Health Care Bill still has shortcomings, but it's a start. The American taxpayer is the beneficiary.

I think it is a vote of compassion: compassion for those who die early deaths because they cannot afford health care, compassion for children whose parents don't make enough to cover their medical costs, compassion for the elderly who stop taking their meds when their prescription insurance reaches the "donut hole," compassion for doctors, nurses and other health professionals who are treating those in need even when there is no way they will get paid for their services.

I believe it is a step in the right direction, and from what I've read about it, will not be a great tax burden. I wonder how our president feels today, knowing that the struggle to get it passed is finally over.

you summed it up well.

I think he feels elated on three fronts: 1. That he has fulfilled the wishes of the voters. 2. That many lives will be improved. 3. That many lives will be saved.

He got a Nobel peace prize, but a prize more deserving would be that he gave hope when there was despair.

Carol, I like your response. I heard a radio personality say today that at least the U.S. was no longer the exception in the realm of developed countries that take care of their citizenry because they can.

I am sure there will be glitches and frustration along the way; but there should be enough intelligence to find solutions after all the effort put into its development.

No solution will fit everyone perfectly, and someone will have to pay. Those to whom the Creator has given the ability and resources to earn incomes in the stratosphere probably have a higher obligation to others less fortunate. Just an unpopular thought to add to the mix.

I say this is going to be a mess, more than
9 states are bringing a lawsuit to the Supreme
Court, it's un-consitutional and if the Supreme
Court rules against Congress, we'll that's the end
of the story, they are a higher authority , that's
the way it was set up to protect the citizens ...

All of the state's attorneys who are bringing the lawsuit are Republicans. Most of the people who are against health care for the millions who have none are Republicans. Why is that, Joe?

The Republicans don't mind paying billions for an unnecessary war, and they seem to think it's great that the wealthy get billions in tax breaks and subsidies every year, but they don't want to spend one single dollar on getting health care for those without it. Why is that Joe?

Tell me Joe, your guys had control of the house for 12 years and had the White House for 8 years, and didn't do anything at all about health care. Why not, Joe, why didn't your Republicans do anything about health care while they had the power?

I know why, and so do you. Because they had their hands deep in America's pockets with the war and the tax breaks, but when someone mentions someone else getting a bit of help, all at once it's socialism. Why is that Joe?

The government has control of my health care since I am on Medicare. The government has control of my daughter's health care since her husband is in the military. The government already controls almost 50% of the health care in this country. I have no problem with Medicare, nor do others my age. To many how smoothly it works has been surprising. Sure, there are some glitches now and then.

The government also has an exceptional health care program for all congressional, senatorial and government employees. Consistently, it is the working poor who are without insurance; I hope they finally have access through this bill. It has been a disgrace in this country that the front line people on minimum wage who make our lives so much easier are one sick day away from destitute. Now, I have people tell me that the "destitute" in this country are wealthy compared to other countries. Where is the point in that argument? So are the weathy, weathier. No, I don't believe from each according to his ability to each according to his need as a mandate. I do believe that those with much have an obligation to those with little; the degree of that obligation varies by circumstance. We pay so little taxes compared to other developed countries and our cost of living is so small also in comparison (especially the cost of food and clothing) that I am embarassed by our greed as a nation and that we dare express that greed so openly.

We who? I'm in the 38% tax bracket. How high would make you happy, DK?

About low cost of living and such. I don't know how you can separate any one "block" from the rest of the pyramid. Try taxing everyone upwards of 50% on their income, which is common in European socialist paradises, and see the results. It's all inter-related. Maybe the cost of living wouldn't be so low if we all had the kind of lazy-ass "worker" mandates along with taxes and other regulations that they have in Finland, for instance.

Rolling back the tax brackets to where they were before Reagan started giving the country away would be a good start.

Good point, Don. Getting back on track is tough when the powerful have stacked the deck.

That is a victim's way of thinking -that "they" have "stacked the deck."

IMO, any stacked deck is more evident in Germany, where about the only way you can own a house is to inherit it. Who wants to pay that 20% transfer tax (to support all the leeches), especially when rent control is so prevalent there?

for someone who is purported to be part of the education system, your ignorance reflected on various threads concerning world cultures is inexcusable.

I don't teach "world cultures." Which has nothing to do with victim-speak, which I recognize very well, since our country is soaked in it.
