PostSubject: Dick's Normandy   Dick's Normandy EmptyMon Nov 09, 2009 9:45 am

I just talked to Jackie. Dick will not have a funeral.

Her desire is that those who wish to honor him, purchase a copy of his book Normandy and donate it to their public library.

I will comply.

Gina,

Thank an you for your participation. It is so good to see you back here--please stay.

DK,

You name the time I will go for it.

I feel like it is three years ago.. Carol and I were tying to get Normandy to best selling status.

We had opposition and did not make it. It would be fun to try again and do it this time.

Dick deserves our best effort.

Thank you all for wishing him well--it was like we said good-bye and I am very grateful he graciously gave us a warning and that we took advantage of it.

I am actually at a loss for words. Although I have never met him personally, all I can say is Sir Dick Stodghill was an extraordinarily brave man who was a fighter for goodwill toward all mankind. He stood out as an outstanding hero, always having a kind word to say and always upholding the truth and I will miss him enormously for those virtues.

May God rest his soul in peace and may his spirit live on forever more through his writings and great virtues he left behind within all of us who had the privileges to know him.

Alice, please pass on to Jackie my condolences. I really liked Dick and respected him a great deal. I know I will miss his posts and his presence. His passing really saddened me.

I'll be getting his book as well.

Three years ago I ordered lots of Dick's book and gave them as Christmas presents. Now if I could only remember who I gave them to and order some for the others. I also need one.

Last year I gave my husband Dick's book about the Hoosier Hotshots. He really enjoyed it, and anyone who was around years ago to remember this group of musicians or just likes music groups, would really enjoy it. My husband had me viewing all sorts of Hoosier Hotshot youtube presentations for weeks after reading the book. Dick personally knew one of the members. He knew lots of people.

I will watch it and tell Jackie

Go for it...

His number was 1,073, 063-- Not bad without a buy button.

I remember when Alice tried to do this before. It would have been nice if everyone had understood then; we seem to get it now. He did have a measure of fame with his History Channel item, his nomination for the writing award and certainly recognition for his years as a newspaperman. He never seemed to seek fame and fortune as much as we thought he should have it.

Reminds me of some movie stars who are never up for Oscars but always have good parts in quality movies, year after year. They are known, but not raved about or put up for awards as their competence with their art is simply accepted as normal for them. I think perhaps Dick Stodghill was like that. He wouldn't have turned from fame, surely; but he didn't need it to know his talent was recognized.

DK,

You got me in gear once again. we can do it. Collective action. We can push Dick's book to number one, then choose another one.

We have to unite.

United we stand--divided we fall.

How many authors post here? It wouldn't take much to do it.

I miss Dick.

When asked how she would like Dick remembered, his wife indicated that buying Normandy 1944 and donating it to local libraries would be a nice remembrance.

Thinking out loud, I thought if those who wished to follow that suggestion all did so in a small window of time, which is likely anyhow, a ratings jump might also show.

We know the ratings at Amazon.com are fickle and some people may choose to use BN or another site. Personally, I think Dick's wife made a suggestion that fits well. However, each person has their own way of expressing their thoughts at this difficult time for his family and friends.

Jackie's wishes are what I will follow.

Dick is a model to me. And I do mean that in the present tense. He was practical in his views of publication possibilities while giving encouragement. He made decisions based on realities and not just wild dreams.

And he never stopped writing in his own style, valuing every word, without apology, without doubt in himself.

To me, Normandy could have been published by the best publisher in the world, but Dick knew that was not likely to happen and felt getting it out in the world was most important. That book was not just written for the reader, but for the writer, memories that kept returning and needed to find a place on paper, in a book he could hold in his hands in his lifetime as a tribute to all those who did not survive as many years as he did.

I will order books for our town libraries as well as the high school, one more for myself and one for my grandson for Christmas. (I have to wait until I am back home or otherwise they will sit outside on my porch.)

Marie,

Thank you for telling me what I already know:
I know we all miss Dick.
I know that Dick had very good self-comfidence.
I know all about Amazon numbers.
I know about opposition.
You have truly surprised me.

Now I will tell you:

This is not what I want.
I merely conveyed Jackie's wishes.
Tell it to her.

Marie,

I know how you feel about PA and their books. But if you read Normandy you would know this is a great book that everyone should read no matter who published it. It is as real as Dick. I fully understand his reasons for going with PA and he expressed them as well. He knew his energy was not in pursuing a big publisher, but getting his words on paper. It is about acceptance. Don't shoot yourself in the foot sticking with your convictions regarding a publisher. Alice isn't trying to make money for the publisher, but to encourage a tribute to a great man, a tribute requested by his wife who knew the pain of the war in his heart.

Believe me, Normandy is a must read. I am really sticking up for it on this Veteran's Day. I learned more about World War II in that one book, than ever in my life. Normandy 1944 is the symbol of Dick's greatness.

I am ordering one more book. I am sending it to you, my friend. Read it if you wish, take it to your library, but I kind of think you'll get out the box of tissues, be transported in time, and then pass it around to others. It is like that. It invades one's being.

And it puts the need to write in our souls. Writing from our hearts is what we leave in this world.

I think Don Stephens posted to Mel's board if it's something like Writer's Voice (I can't always remember to find it :-(
