| Vicki,
What a nightmare!
Some teachers belong in a nut house.
I am sorry it happened to you. Forunately people have finally wised up to the fact that all teachers are not infallible.
When I was School Board Chairperson, a father called me at work to complain because his daughter had been detained in the Principal's office for four hours--the reason--inappropriate clothing.
This all had a very familar ring to me. Our daughter had been under the gun many times over her clothes and in fact had taken to rising early in the morning and cutting her beautiful clothes into nightmarish outfits just to anger this prinicipal.
I began an investigation. I called the school secretary and inquired about the outfit. She was hopping mad. She said the outfit was just fine and that another child was wearing the same sort of an outtfit and that was not a problem.
I called the principal and he was unable to explain to me what was so dastardly about the outfit. I grasped that he did not like the child.
Parents need to be alert to their kid's teachers.
This man finally removed his kids from the school. He was wise.

| By the way, I am not down on teachers. There are some very good ones--I would like to see them paid better.
I do think that teachers should have to demonstrate some fondness for children and a basic understanding of how they tick before they are allowed to be in charge of a room full of them. By the way, No one likes my avatar? How about the designer bug in the background? I got him/her for a mere $85,00 a few years back! |

| It will never be okay that I, or any child was/is treated like we were or still are. We all know things still happen and can be happening right under our noses. It taught me a valuable lesson and in most ways has made me stronger. There is evil in the world and it tries to drag you down. I believe with all my heart experiences like those can make or break a person. I personally have used the negative experiences in my life to learn from and will always try to do the right thing by others. I suppose this is why when I see cruelty it really gets to me and I speak up.
I really respect those teachers who have used their teaching as a tool to help and guide. Too many teachers don't take their jobs that seriously and don't realize the effect they have on kids and what it does to them the rest of their lives. Others know they have power and use it in the most horrible ways.
I recently got a chance to work with a great tutor for some of the kids I work with. Our kids might be intellectually disabled, but they are just as important as anyone else. He came into my office the day after school was out after getting his supplies he used to teach our kids. So was excited about how the kids rose to the standards and completed what he laid out for them. The tutor said he had asked for little certificates, awards from the school district, that would let the kids see how much he appreciated their achievements. He was denied those certificates through the school. I looked at him in astonishment when he told me about this, he would not mention names to me. He also said that one of the head teachers told him, in quote, "I don't know why you get so excited about those kids achievements, they won't amount to anything." The sad part is there are a few of the teachers who have this attitude about the kids who attend regular school.
I am making sure those kids get certificates at least through my company.
Why do people decide to become teachers if they have this attitude? |

| Because, Vicki, There is a great range in brains in teachers.
We know our Ann is very smart, caring and peceptive.
I wish every teacher had her passion.
Unfortunately one can become a teacher with little brainpower.
Also being around children all day makes some people feel superior.
No it will never be okay the way your teacher treated you.
My fourth grade teacher probably ruined lives also. I don't even like to think about her.
She was nice to me and I wish she would have extended her kindness to her own daughter and others in the school.
She beat kids for the fun of it--with a rubber hose--no less. No kid deserves that! I don't know why anyone would allow ther kids to go to such a school. |

| If I was a good teacher, it was because I had some of the teachers Vickie has described (including 3rd grade) and felt there had to be a better way.

| Good for you, Marie.
If there were rmore parents like you there would be fewer problems.
It is a national disgrace that teachers are allowed to hit kids.
Who do you think they hit?
The ones they do not like. |

| Ann from the very beginning that I've seen your posts at least the last couple of years or so, I've thought of you as a great teacher. I've always admired Carol as well for her her caring ways as a social worker. I can't tell you how much I've learned on the boards about people in general and am glad for all of the experiences.
I do what I do because I care and am able to do something about abuse I see. It is a good feeling when you stand up for what is right. In my own way it is a way to pay it forward.
Maria, it is good that you got to the bottom of the problem and dealt with it as you did. I'm sure it taught your son that he could trust you to stand up for him in his time of need.
Alice, you are right about there being a great range in teachers. This is why I have not let those bad experiences get to me and I don't lump all teachers in the same light. I've met and worked with some wonderful teachers.

| Marie,
As usual you are right.
One day Mrs. Meanie was having a joyous day tormenting a child for no good reason.
She had a stupid rule that every child must go home to their own house after school.
This poor child's mother told him she would not be at home so he was to go to a friend's house.
Mrs, Meanie saw him going the wrong way home, called him back and beat him with her rubber hose.
He could do nothing else than go where his mother said, so Mrs. Meanie beat him some more the next morning before school started.
Thank Heavens--he had a cousin with a brain. She grabbed that teacher and dug her claws into her arm until the blood ran.
The teacher retired in the middle of the year and was replaced with a sane one. |

| Marie,
I really don't know if a teacher can damage someone forever.
They can sure make one's life miserable, though.
Probably the whack jobs I have described made some people's lives
That stupid principlal I spoke of merely built our daughter's will.

| Speaking of stilts, I've been searching for the picture of me on my high stilts to put on here.
I think my family had plans for me to go into the circus, since someone also made me a unicycle.
(If I had gotten a little more proficient, I could have run away to the circus, but just for the summer.)

| Carol, Why not make a career of it? I never thought of such a thing--that's why I haven't succeeded--total lack of vision. Bring your stilts to England and we can put on a show with Shelagh-we will make it up as we go along. Who knows--we might make it big! Shelagh, You were a cute kid! |

I have got to find that picture!

| Carol
Find the picture and tell us why you do not look happy.
I walked on stilts also--don't know why--the air was thin where I walked, there are no pictures of me--probably because they did not photograph in outer space then. |
