query about Amazon.com

hi, guys.
please correct me if i'm wrong since i'm not sure if this is the right place to open a query thread like this one.
right now i have this query for those who are familiar with Amazon.com.
i've been browsing the net for the status of my book and currently there are no ratings or reviews yet. but lately i've been wondering about the Seller Rating part in the Used & New section of Amazon.com. what are these ratings for? are they ratings for my book or ratings for the seller's/distributor's reputation?

The ratings in that section are seller's ratings, Paul.

Have you registered with Amazon"s Author Central? You will get better info there, and will be able to set up a complete profile.

i'm sorry. i stopped using Amazon ever since my e-book failed to sell. it's the publisher's marketing division that's handling the stuff at amazon.

I checked out your book on Amazon, Paul. It has made no sales in hardback, paperback or Kindle format. Trafford Publishing expect you to buy your own books at a discount for you to resell. The listing on Amazon costs them nothing while giving the impression that they are trying to sell your book. Without you driving customers to Amazon, the book will make no sales.

so you mean all this time it has not appeared at the book shops at all?!
or... no distributor has requested copies to sell at their sites/stores?!

Paul. I empathize with you. My first publisher perfomed in the same manner. Sales to authors was their forte. Self-promotion and self-sales is the name of the game. It is a game I will no longer play.

A lot depends on whether you are publishing fiction or non-fiction. Most non-fiction books have at least a limited market. With fiction, you are on your own.

Start by setting up an Author Central page at Amazon, and take advantage of the profile section.. Come up with as many tags as you can.

The author Central page has a link to some general marketing techniques.

It's an uphill battle, but it has been done.

I'm in Author Central. Don't know how much good it does, though. I do like looking up the sales statistics on a good day....it also includes the books in which I have short stories.
