PostSubject: Weight gain   Weight gain EmptyMon May 28, 2012 12:28 pm

We hear much about weight loss and the problem people have losing weight. But what about people who wish to gain weight? Is there a safe way to do it?

My wife needs to gain weight. Her weight loss occurred after operations and also with stomach problems where she just couldn’t eat certain foods. Fried foods caused her nausea. She is swimming in her clothes and is trying desperately to gain weight. Eating fatty/greasy foods don’t agree with her. Any suggestions?

Higher amounts of lean protein and complex carbs? Can she do some mild muscle building exercises along with?

Since her ankle was broken, walking or foot movement is limited. She was just fitted with special soles for her shoes and wears a prescribed band on her ankle.
I'll discuss the lean proteins and comples carbs with her. Thanks for your input.

I forgot to mention that she is about 5' 2" and weights less than 100 lbs.

She should weigh 110. A stationary bike might give her safer exercise.

More frequent meals might help too. Add a nutritional supplement shake such as Ensure.

Eat dark chocolate.

Abe, I was thinkig about Giselle's problem and remembered this exercise program. My mom's drs. recommended it for her. It is a half-hour show on most PBS stations. I don't know if you could get it in Germany, but I just did a search and learned there are DVD's available. She might want to ask her drs. about it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sit_and_Be_Fit

Quote :
Sit and Be Fit is an award-winning exercise program for senior citizens and individuals with limited physical motion, that is available on video tapes and is distributed to public television stations (although not by the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS)).[1]
The show was created in 1987 by Mary Ann Wilson, a registered nurse in the field of post-polio rehabilitation and geriatrics.
Wilson recognized the need for exercise, especially for moderately active seniors or those needing rehabilitation from strokes, heart attacks or other injuries.
The shows mission statement is: Sit and Be Fit is committed to improving the quality of life of older adults and physically limited individuals through safe, effective exercises that are available through television, videos, personal appearances, classes, seminars, books, and the Internet. The show actively promotes functional fitness, healing, and independence, and is an effective resource for professionals in aging and fitness.[2]

After the exercise, Gisela will enjoy a nourishing stout, or the German equivalent:

Long ago, I wanted to lose weight. I bought a liquid diet drink that was supposed to help you lose weight. I went on eating like there was no tomorrow. I gained 20 pound within 2 weeks. Milkshakes might do the same and not taste nearly as bad.
A couple of weeks of milkshakes and Ensure might fix her up. Once on, it is hard to take it off. hahaha.
Love,
Betty

Again, thanks to all of you for your input.
She has started eating whenever she feels hungry. Today we go shopping and I plan to get lots of chocolate and snacks. Unfortunately, I also like chocolate and snacks. Abstaining won't be easy.
As for enjoying a nourshing stout, Shelagh. She shared mine last night. In small doses she may qualify to have her own full measure. Smile

Exercise is also on the menu. By the time we're through with her, she will most likely need to lose weight. In the meanwhile, she is delighted to go shopping and buy clothes that fit. With every adversity there is a benefit. Evil or Very Mad

Abe,

When I got sick last year, I lost over sixty pounds, the Doc wanted me to put some of it back on. She had me drink diet supplement drinks. The ones you use to replace a meal when dieting, only she had me drink them in addition to a meal.. I put twenty of the sixty back on in a month...which is where she wanted me to be. It's safe and healthy!

Thanks Don. BTW. I started reading Bearkiller for the third time. It is not a good story and good writing, but a great story with great writing. As for time sequence, it has a surprise for the reader. I encourage everyone who reads this post to get the book and read it.

There are so many great stories and so much great writing that just does not get noticed by the mass public. An acquaintance of mine is a promotions guy from Hollywood. He's always telling me about talking to these people on the phone and showing me letters from them; he knows well that I have a book he should help me push, but he doesn't even read it. On the otherhand, his brother wrote a book; I reviewed it, and I notice he carries that review in the package he uses to promote his brother's book for book signing and sales to Wal Mart and to Publix.

He has often told me about books that took off with five minutes on the Today show ...

It's just the luck of the draw.

Abe,

How about the protein shakes that athletes use to bulk up? My brother in law, a retired special forces Lt. Col., has used them from time to time, some with delicious fruit juice as a base that he makes into smoothies. Nuts are also high in healthy fats and come in wonderfully delicious varieties with and without salt. I can easily gain ten pounds just by looking at pictures of cashews, macademias, pistachios, almonds, peanuts, walnuts, pecans . . . .

Victor and Don. Your suggestions are very good. My wife will run that by her doctor before trying. She's taking so much medication at the moment that anything out of the ordinary must be approved by her doctor. Often what appears innocent (ingredients) can create other problems.

Really appreciate the suggestions and your concern.
