Hi Everyone...FOOD AND WEIGHT LOSS- BAD CARBS-GOOD CARBS Icon_biggrin

What do you think is the best diet ? I read
on the web, bad carbs , good carbs, throw out all
the white stuff, no good. We'll since I'm a diabetic
I started this on 3/10/2010 , stopped taking my
diabetic drug , since I'm the beginning of it. I only
eat chicken, fish, vegetables such as Snow Peas,
String Beans, Squash , Tomatoes, Cucumbers, carrots,
whole fiber bread. So far my readings have been between
75 and 130 , 130 is the top your allowed. The Dr. thought
it was great that I'm doing it through diet. So far lost 2 lbs.
I only use extra virgin oil....

What is your favorite foods ?

Cheers..Joe...FOOD AND WEIGHT LOSS- BAD CARBS-GOOD CARBS Icon_biggrin

Hi Joe

If you find anything that works - let me know. I need to lose at least a stone before my holiday in July (so I can put it on again!!). Trouble is whenever I start to make progress something comes up - for instance we've just been on an inpromtu 4 day mini-cruise - the day after I got down below 14 st! I find the best way is to eat little and regularly, combined with exercise. If only it was as easy as typing it!!! Oh well - good luck

I like this guy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Pollan

I have his book, Food Rules on my B&N iphone reader.

Quote :
Pollan holds that consumption of fat and dietary cholesterol do not lead to a higher rate of coronary disease, and that the reductive analysis of food into nutrient components is a flawed paradigm. He questions the view that the point of eating is to promote health, pointing out that this attitude is not universal and that cultures that perceive food as having purposes of pleasure, identity, and sociality may end up with better health. He explains this seeming paradox by vetting then validating the notion that nutritionism and, therefore, the whole Western framework through which we intellectualize the value of food is more a religious and faddish devotion to the mythology of simple solutions than a convincing and reliable conclusion of incontrovertible scientific research. Pollan spends the rest of his book explicating his first three phrases: "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." He contends that most of what Americans now buy in supermarkets, fast food stores, and restaurants is not in fact food, and [ that a good practical tip would be to eat only those things that people of his grandmother's generation would have recognized as food.

A similar approach started back in the 90's with Diane Schwarzbein's The Schwarzbein Principle. I've been losing slowly but steadily for the past five years following the guidelines of eating natural, local, preservative-free food, and focusing on the freshness and quality in balance rather than eliminating or limiting any of the forms (carbs, fats, proteins).

Here is a very good summary of Pollan's basic concept:

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1200782-2,00.html

Quote :
Don't eat anything your great-great-great grandmother wouldn't recognize
as food. Imagine how baffled your ancestors would be in a modern
supermarket: the epoxy-like tubes of Go-Gurt, the preternaturally fresh
Twinkies, the vaguely pharmaceutical Vitamin Water. Those aren't foods,
quite; they're food products. History suggests you might want to wait a
few decades or so before adding such novelties to your diet, the
substitution of margarine for butter being the classic case in point. My
mother used to predict "they" would eventually discover that butter was
better for you. She was right: the trans-fatty margarine is killing us.
Eat food, not food products.

Ian...

All you have to do is throw out all
the white stuff, flour, sugar, rice, no sweets.
I do cheat every once in awhile, two cookies
with coffee. I eat roast chicken ( I have a
convection oven with a barbecue spit ) I brush
it with olive oil and herbs, comes out like butter.
I don't use butter, I use I Can't Beleive It's Not
Butter. I steam or stir fry in olive oil String Beans,
Snow Peas, Baby Carrots. I also bake squash Acorn
or Spaghetti Squash. For lunch I usually will eat
Cucumbers, Lettuce, Tomatoes, I love Tomatoes.
I put olive oil on it, also I sometimes add a boiled
egg. I also add solid Tuna from a can or Salmon in
can. It's not a hard diet, I'm shocked I got use to it.
You can add any meat, trim fat off....I went from
184 lbs to 182 lbs, it seems to be a slow process
I have another 22 lbs to go and I'm determined.

Cheers..Joe

Hi Joe

Will give it a try but I have a couple of problems - I do all the cooking as Fran, my wife, works full time and i'm at home all day and we have two teenage daughters to feed. Obviously we wont inflict a diet on them and cooking 2 or 3 different meals is a bit of a problem. The other is TEMPTATION!!!!!!!!!!!! Still I'll keep at it as summer approaches and salads become more of an option. Good luck with the 22lbs Smile

Eating is such a personal thing. I know people whose eyes roll back in their head when they eat anything.

What I know is that really fat people eat a LOT. It does not matter if it is catalope or pizza. Eating a whole catalope or a whole pizza or a whole cake or a package of hot dogs in private and then saying that they do not know why they are so fat leaves out some logic. Also, eating salad and then ten cream horns is defeating. Sitting by the television and watching people exercise does not get it.

Getting off the butt is where it is. Do stuff. Walk around your yard, your house, your neighborhood.

There are a lot of diets and info about weight loss. You have to change. That is the bottom line. It is like quitting smoking. You have to change your habits of eating. It takes about a month to change one habit for another.

Love,
Betty

Joe, the acai berry has been around for a while now. This is only one of many articles saying it's another scam:

I eat anything I want. I just don't eat as much of it as I want. Trying to cut out things I like -which includes flour, sugar, pasta- is a setup for failure. I drink lots of green tea and eat steamed vegetables to fill myself up so I'll be able to be content with small portions of the better stuff.

Check out Weight Watchers magazine, it's great. Lots of easy recipes and tips.
