| For those (including me) who turn their noses up at the thought of a vanity press, read the link below. Barringer Press is straight vanity press.

| Interesting. It doesn't seem to matter who does the publishing. |

| Do you think the film options are scams, too, DK? |

| I kind of turn my nose up, these days, to the idea of self-publishing being called "vanity press." The publishing business is changing.
At the same time, we need to be wary of possible scams, and look into anything that sounds too good to be true.

| I don't consider self-publishing as vanity press. Vanity press is when you hire a publishing company to edit, print and perhaps market your book. Barringer Press does all three and is a very reputable company. They charge about $2500 which includes a negotiated number of books for the author's use.
The Naples Press Club sponsored the meeting attended by Carol Green, literary agent, who arranged to have the two books in options for movies. The Naples Press Club membership includes major names in the journalism and publishing industries - their members do not scam.
I don't consider options as scams; however, they are no guarantee that a movie will ever be produced. That's just the way of it.
My point was also made by Abe, it does not matter the method used to publish. The second part to that sentence is: it matters who you know and their contacts. That assumes the book has merit. |

| Self-publishing to me is when you hire an editor, and pay a printer to format and publish the book. You are responsible for cover art, marketing, distribution - the whole gamut.
I'm sure there are overlaps just as there are with small presses. |

This of course assumes that no money changed hands for any reason to gain the movie options. If money changes hands, then there is the expectation that something will happen, even though there has more than likely been up front talk that it may not. It is the expectation, and the payment, that turns an otherwise legitimate offering into a scam. If the two authors paid nothing and their books were picked up, and picked up entirely on their merits, then that's great. If any kind of favoritism at all was shown by anyone in the club, then that's something else too. I have noticed that sometimes, especially in clubs, it's not necessarily the most talented person, or the best book, that gets the attention, sometimes there are other factors. |

| I'll take whatever favors I can get. Ghost Orchid has already been vetted as an exceptional read by reviewers, the publisher and through other channels. Some readers may have a different opinion; some literary agents may see it differently. If connections give me a head start - then I want all the connections possible.
Barringer Press staff are members of the Naples Press Club. |

| The only person I'd trust with a movie option to one of my titles would be my agent ( if I had one)
We can but dream. *sighs*
