PostSubject: What GREAT movies have you seen at the theater lately?   What GREAT movies have you seen at the theater lately? EmptySun Oct 11, 2009 7:24 am

I wondered if we could have a continued thread about movies. A friend and I went to the theater to pick a movie - and none of them sounded good. They all had decent reviews of one sort or another. We picked Surrogates for the action; but it was a long night in much too comfortable seats........

If we could mention the movies we see in the theater (and maybe a second section for DVD's?) to help others have another opinion, it might help make choices. We went to a "new" theater concept that meant the normally $5.50 movie was $12.00 which made it worse......$22.00 for soft leather seats picked out ahead of time (the theater was empty - wonder why).

I don't go often, but saw Julie and Julia last month - a total delight!

And it has me seriously thinking of setting up a more regular blog. Look what Julie's did for her - a book with a major publisher and a movie.

As for theaters, there is a new concept here and in other places that I've enjoyed going to with my kids. There are now at least three theaters here that serve dinner during the movie. the cost of the food is reasonable and tastes good, and the theaters have managed to make it comfortable and non-intrusive. You can even get beer or wine to go with your meal if you want.

We've seen several good films this past year at our favorite, the Alamo Drafthouse, including Ironman and Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull. They reminded me of the films I took them to see as children - fun family night functions.

After spending so much of my working life behind the scenes in Cinema's as a Technician. I now seldom go to see a movie.
I have seen way too many rubbish movies and too few genuine gems. Not that my interest in the movie industry has been diminished in any way by these experiences.
Nowdays I wait until they come out on DVD unless that is it's a movie I would judge to be worthy (from a doozie point of view) of a visit to the Cinema.
The dolby digital surround sound is always best experienced in a theatre.
I have a fondness for the cinema, the sound of 35mm film clacking through a projector gate at 24 frames per second I find so interesting in a geeky way.
I was in charge of a projection department in a multiplex Cinema. I had to train others how to run the projectors lace and splice the films and maintain the equipment.

The Cinema's in the UK make their money solely through selling coke, popcorn, hot dogs, ice cream and candy.
Most of the box office takings go back to the film distributor, the Cinema could not run on the money it actually keeps from the ticket sales.
This is why food and drink prices are so inflated in the Cinemas.
The film's themselves are loaned to the theatre then returned after the run of the movie. The movies run depends on how popular it is and how many tickets are sold. I have seen many a movie last only just one week after only having been shown in one of our very very small screens.

I used to preview films before they were released which often meant late night viewing after hours but you got the whole theatre to yourself.

I can't help because the last movie I saw in a theater was Wall Street starring Michael Douglas. That was about 1991 or '92. Don't care for the sound of most of today's movies and hate the boxcar-style theaters, having grown up during the era of the movie palaces. Don't like the prices, either.
I do see a lot of movies, but on the TCM (Turner Classic Movies) channel.

Hello:
The last thing I recently saw was the Surrogate, it was good not great, anything before that eh, can remember but i am looking forward to some gratuitous violence and action with ARMORED and some other guns and glory movies; I don't watch slasher films, those are a waste of brain and time. I wait till a lot of movies come on dvd so I can rent them for free at my local library OR wait till they come to the local $1.00 theater in three to six months time. My parent s pay $6.00, I pay $9.00 but with my local theather movie bonus card sometimes i get half off or free tix. Its worth it to wait for something epic like 2012 with all of its intense action and effects on a big screen but other than that, save your money to buy movie snacks outside smuggle them in and enjoy the show.

Good - now I have a movie to see at the fancy theater in Naples - with the soft leather seats and the overpriced tickets (pre-seating also).

Last night, I watched Anne Hathaway in Rachel Getting Married on dvd. It is a fine example of how disastrous it can be if adults give irresponsible teenagers responsibility. This is one I think you would enjoy.

And very scary. This focus on The End concerns me. I prefer to think of new beginnings. I will probably skip this one.

I haven't been to the movies in awhile, but Curt and I took his 87-year-old mother to see Michael Jackson's This is It movie. We all loved it, and were singing Michael Jackson songs all week. His planned concert would have been amazing, and it's sad that all they have is this movie. But the movie was a lot of fun to watch and bop to the music throughout.

Of course, being married to a pilot, one has to see all the pilot movies. We went to Amelia and it was great. I loved the acting, even the costumes from the thirties.

But it was yet another movie where I knew the ending, and how much I wanted her to find that island where they were going to land, but knew they would not. Darn.

Last movie I saw in the theater was "Captain America". It wasn't bad. In fact, it was better than I expected.

But the other day, my son and I re-watched a movie we had seen years ago. It's called "The Jack Bull" and stars John Cusack. It is a western and takes place in Wyoming (though it is filmed in Canada).

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0171410/

It is an excellent movie about fighting for what is right. (re: the website - the movie trailer doesn't do the movie justice, but most of the reviews are very good).

I don't normally like westerns. I don't normally like movies 'with a message'. I am also not sure that I agree with everything Mr. Cusack's character did. And most of all, recommending movies isn't something I like to do because so much is a matter of taste.

But this movie, though I wouldn't call it my favorite movie, is probably the BEST movie I have ever seen.

You can not help but CARE about the main character all the way until the end of the movie.
