If you want a realistic idea of what you are up against (another UK small publisher, not a top NY publisher), then check out this series of books. Look at the number of reviews on the first book in the series. This book has been free since last June and is still free (it is being used to generate readers, not sales):

Now look at the second book in the series and check the ranking and number of reviews:

Finally check the ranking and reviews for the third book in the series:

Look at the pricing of the three books and use your accountant's mind to figure out what the publisher is trying to do by giving away tens of thousands of free copies of the first book, pitching the second at a higher price and the third at a higher price still. You should be able to work out that less is more (more books for free produces less books selling at a much higher price).

The bottom line with publishers is PROFIT, not number of books sold. A bestseller that sells 100,000 copies at a $1 each does not generate as much money as a non bestseller that sells 5,500 books at $20 each. Publishing is a business.

Spending more time on promoting your book will not produce a profit for me. I really have finished with the Living by the Swamp project.
