Some have to make choices between going hungry and driving to work to keep their jobs.

Buy $10 of gas and $10 of food. Replace the Delmonte with a generic brand. Replace the three packages of meat in that photo with other sources of protein (e.g., beans), it's healthier and cheaper. What's in that brown paper package, anyhow? Buy milk by the gallon (assuming it won't go bad before you can drink it) at a warehouse club and the rest of that stuff at Walmart.
And investigate ridesharing or carpooling to work. $20 will go farther for the savvy shopper.

Happy Easter, everyone!

It is neither. Some of us need the kind of energy that only meat can provide, and which you'd need a ton of beans to match. As for the health part, the jury's still out on that one, and has been for a couple of centuries. A healthy diet is a mixture of everything. By sticking to beans you turn your body into a plantation whose top soil is steadily depleting due to the lack of rotation.

How about some vegetables. Fruit's pretty good too.

Why not build some train tracks instead?
Driving is a mild form of slavery.
No, thank you.
Incidentally, most of those who carpool to work do not really have to go to work at all. Oh, I know, "working from home" means using the web a lot, and using the web a lot means a lot of surfing (instead of working). You know. Nobody surfs "at the office," nobody goes web-shopping for shoes for three hours, and the merest thought of watching a YouTube video at one's desk is abhorrent to all office workers.
Happy Easter!

Oh, yeah, and bananas a a great source of potassium.
And most beans today are genetically modified.

I don't buy into the meat eater philosophy. I come from a long line of meat eaters who succumbed to heart attacks and strokes.
Vegetables can provide all the nutrition one needs. I like meat and still eat it, but try to avoid red meat. Moderation is important in everything one eats.
Most of the fat people I knew and know are meat eaters. The vegetable eaters I know are slim and trim and they do not lack energy.
Imagine eating a big steak and then imagine it lying in the stomach to be digested. Must the meat rot before it can be passed? Imagine the grease/fat. Ever try to rinse a pan with grease? It clings and needs detergent to remove it from the pan. Imagine that grease/fat clinging to the walls of the stomach. How much is absorbed and how much is eventually passed? Common sense will answer many questions. You don't need a specialist to interpret.
I think we've all heard the saying: "You are what you eat" Don't know if that is true, but it sounds logical.

Before the gas prices began to rise, families were already at their max in terms of economizing for food and creating other savings in their lives due to unemployment or finally gaining employment in low wage jobs. Nice thoughts, LC, but even more savings are already in place in most homes. Stood in line at the supermarket lately? No one goes through without coupons. The coupon shopper was once the rare person who held up the line.

This has been an interesting video because the first thing people do is change the conditions so they don't have to make the either/or decision. It takes $20 worth of gas at a minimum to make it to work those three days or you get fired. You have $20 and no food. It is Tuesday night.

My husband and I lived without a car for a couple of years. We either walked or took public transportation.
It isn't a hard to become accustomed to the car-less lifestyle.
When we moved to a different city we did buy a cheap second hand car because we were pretty far from the nearest bus stop. However, we did find a place to live near his job. So he took a bicycle to work. Healthier and cheaper.
We also were very good at stretching the food budget.
My husband and I have been making a conscious effort to improve our health over the last few years. The industry we are in is very bad on physical health (little or no exercise combined with truck stop food).
One thing I've learned is that bad eating habits isn't just about wrong choices in food ... it is about over eating. Once you become accustomed to eating the correct portions sizes, it is surprising how little food you really need to eat in order to be healthy.

Good post JoElle.
When the stomach is stretched, it takes more food to satisfy the appetite. Cutting back isn't easy, but when the stomach shrinks a bit, there is less food needed to satisfy. Will power is a big factor. Naturally the right choice of food is important, however the stomach can stretch even with healthy foods. Eating less is good. A tendancy with some people who have little money, is to over indulge in food whenever they can. Trying to store up doesn't work and is counter-productive, since stretching the stomach (as previously stated) only makes you want more at the next eating.
Truckers (and my brother was one) had a problem with a big stomach. From discussions with him, he looked forward to the next stop and what he would be eating. Eating breaks up the monotony, however it can also makes one drowsy. Taking a food break to wake up doesn't work for everyone. And eating without exercising to work off the food, adds weight. I'm not making this stuff up.
Truckers are a special breed. They have nerves of steel, patience, and endurance. They are also human and have weaknesses.

This is exactly the attitude I discussed on another thread, the unwillingness of people to do what it takes to survive, even when faced with "$20: gas or food" dilemmas. Most of the world doesn't eat like this, but you "need the kind of energy" only the food in the picture can provide. So wring your hands when you have this dilemma, look helplessly around, demand the government tax the more resourceful people even higher to feed you, and then finally, just auto-darwinate. I really don't care.

Unless you've surveyed most homes, I don't know how you can make this statement. Ricardo's post refutes it right there.

Drive to work and stop at the food bank on the way back?

And this has what to do with the price of beans at Walmart?

Because I am a believer that beans save lives, be they pinto, black, navy, lima, red, northern, ....or go on to peas, blackeyed, green, pink eyed, ......beans have fed the world for generations and that means generations who could not kill or buy meat.
Meat is not a necessity for survival or energy. It is a hog-trough human slobber.
Fried fat is more a decandant need than meat.

People can live just fine on beans. They are gas producing also. Too bad we can't run our cars on that kind of gas.

..and cows too! We will avoid starvation by becoming bean and grass eaters. It is far more efficient to eat vegetables than to eat meat.
