| I think debate is a healthy privilege we have as citizens of the United States of America. I only dislike debate when the parties involved run out of facts and stoop to name calling or judging the persons in the debate beyond their stand on a particular subject. It's one thing to say, "I don't agree with your facts," and another to say, "you are an idiot." Personal attacks are the last ditch efforts when all else is lost; and our politicians seem to prefer them because they stir up emotions that blind people to the real issues.
That was the great thing about a formal debate club experience; you had to debate topics even though you disagreed with the premise. It helped develop the understanding that people can love each other in general but have strong opinions against some of their ideas.
I did indicate that I believe LC lacks compassion in general. I don't mean that to demean her/him. It is my opinion based on words expressed in multiple contexts on this forum. I may be entirely wrong. It doesn't really matter since we are only words here and may find each other with different characteristics in person that would be endearing and wonderful or find each other horrid and cantankerous. Only a few of us have met; otherwise, it's an open question.
Once in awhile I'll catch a news show where a good debate occurs. They keep the mind sharp and open to see how intelligent people can find such different points of view in the same information.
If we all agree about everything, life would be tedious and dull. I would just like to agree on a few humane principles; but then, that's me. |

| Me? Allow debates on the forum? The very idea. |

| DK,
I don't demean LC either. I just question her existence. I never met anyone like her before. |

| A basic disagreement over health care insurance. That is fine, even though I am 100% correct, I will abide her wrong thinking. |

| It depends. To argue or dispute is not something I come here to do. To wonder and ask genuine questions is a sort of debate and which I am comfortable with. |

| Mike,
I hear you. discussions are more pleasant, however if one won't stop at that, I get a kick out of matching wits with a good-humored person. |

Nah! Must have rules. If there are no rules, how would you know if you are being naughty. Being naughty is half the fun. Sneaking away for an hour or so with your secretary, now that is naughty and half the fun. Ask Clinton.... |
