| But you have "pre-pdf" files, no? You didn't write it in pdf. Smashwords, I beleive accepts ePub for submit. There are conversion programs all over the place, lots on http://www.mobileread.com I think Smashwords offers a guaranteed conversion for around $30?
Smashwords has some of the best, most comprehensive and readable help/support pages of anybody. |

| Use adobe acrobat (full program) and save as file as a word .doc or Text or rtf format. Then you can convert them to whatever format the ebook requires. |

| Then save it as a word .doc for Smashwords accepts those just fine. Upload the doc file and smashwords will then convert to all the ebook formats for you. As easy as pie. |

| But if you save the pdf as txt you lose all formatting. Might be a big problem, or not. |

| Joe, check the layout and page format that the ebook publisher wants. Font, spacing, tabs, etc, and then save the book in a Microsoft Word document. Most all ebook publishers now take word docs and they convert them to whatever format they use. Just be sure you have the page format right, and double check all spelling, grammar, typos, etc, because they won't check any of that. Good luck. |

| But uploading .doc files is seldom the best route. The difference between a .doc and .pdf file on Lulu is startling.
Still curious, Joe. You have a .doc file on this, right? And can work it before doing the pdf? Pdf REALLY hard to convert from. |

| In that case, Joe, try out dmondeo's idea of nabbing the content out and saving it as text files.
I don't have the full program, but can use selection tools (the little snapshot camera, for one, to grab text and paste it elsewhere. |

| Hate to burst your bubble Lin, but I just got through uploading a ton of stuff for Kindle, and they wanted Word docs. Smashwords want the same. They'll take txt files, but it seems they prefer .doc files. Was different a while back, but the times they are a'changin'. |

| Not a bubble at all, Don. I didn't say nobody takes .doc, just that they don't all require it, or even accept it. And that among those that do, such as Lulu, it's often better to submit in pdf. |

| I don't have any experience at all with Lulu, Lin. But in February Kindle wanted the books and stories formatted in a word doc. Last time I looked at Smashwords, they did too. However, I ain't no expert. Just an old guy that's managed to get a lot of stuff into the Kindle program. I don't really care, just trying to save Joe a bunch of headaches. Getting your book published as an ebook ain't rocket science. Just make sure you've formatted the pages the way they want them, save it in word, and send it in. They'll do the rest. Oh, and don't forget that typo/spelling/grammar thing. |

| I think people were assuming you were using the Microsoft Office suite. Word is its word processing program, and its files are .docs. |

| Joe, I know some people are fans of open source (free) software like Open Office, but at times like this, MS Office is worth the money. The .doc file is a universal standard, and converting it to pdf is as easy as clicking "Save as pdf."
Office isn't that expensive, either, what, about $90? And you get so much for it. |

| Joe you can just save your .odt files out of OO into a .doc file and go with that if it helps.
if all you have is the pdf, try selecting text on the pdf and pasting it into OO, then saving as a .doc file. |
