| It seems like we have lost respect for the truth.
When I was a kid we had to tell the truth--I managed not to a few times--and luckily my folks never knew.
Now it seems like it is fashionable to lie.
Comcast lied to us. They told us if we had cable our TV's would be just fine. We have to have a box for each TV.
We had to go and get it. I am sick of lies. |

| Alice, this world in under the control of the father of a lie. Do you expect those under his control to not lie? |

| Alice, I have ComCast and I was told just the opposite. That I didn't need a box, if I was receiving the signal now I would continue to receive it after the switch...I did not need to do anything! |

| I was told by Comcast that I wouldn't need a box and then I was told by Comcast that I would need a box. I now have a box. I'm sick of deliberate lies and deliberate misleading and deception. Really sick of it! |

| Selective lying can avoid grief. Half the people I see look like they died the day before yesterday but even so I say, "Hey, you're lookin' good!" Then, too, a well chosen lie has kept me out of trouble at times. |

| Anyone who says they never lie, is lying. There are lies to help people and lies to deceive. I think those are the kind that Alice was referencing. |

| It sounds like ComCast didn't know for sure and maybe should have said that in the first place. It probably depended on your TV. We have old TVs but they have all worked on DirecTV and Merrimac Communications. The second is out of a town of about 400 people and in the direct line of fire of the massive road construction, so we didn't count on much working.
I would much rather hear "I don't know," than "it will work."
I have a friend who has kept important secrets from me and our friendship has dwindled off to nothing but pleasantries when we see each other. I know the secrets. I have sources, but I would rather have heard them from her. Now it is just pleasantries. Maybe what she didn't say then wasn't a lie, but when you are a true friend to someone you can tell them the important stuff in your heart, things like becoming a great-grandmother.
Indeed it is good to have boundaries, care about others' feelings, etc., tell a few white lies to protect, but the truth is sometimes more important. I love honesty.
People used to say I look good. Now they say I looked terrible and now I REALLY look good! This happy avatar is what they see these days.

| "Gee, Carol, you look awful. When's the funeral?" Now see, what if someone said that? Fortunately, they'd be lying. This doesn't seem to be coming out the way I intended. |

| I know what you mean Dick. Thank goodness no one told the truth! Shelagh, if I remember correctly, and I'm not going back to check, you said your avatar scared you and Dick was agreeing with you. Carol |

| Had a wreck at 5:00 p.m. yesterday. A double dump truck was turning left. I stopped until he turned (two-lane dangerous road). Instead of turning, he started backing into me full speed in reverse. It was a nightmare of unbelievable proportions because it was 5:00 p.m. I blasted my horn, threw my car in reverse, but couldn't get away. Wham! He hit me hard. I thought I'd be crushed between traffic behind and the truck pushing me back. Finally, he stopped. Some traffic stopped behind me, but no one checked to see what happened. Mostly they just blew their horns and flashed their high beams and made had gestures, like we were sitting in the middle of the road, the truck stuck to my bumper, drinking tea. He said, "I'm sorry, I didn't look in my mirror. Looks like the damage isn't much." It was very much! I was very scared of the whole situation. I called 911. When four police cars arrived, the man in the truck told them I ran into him. Fortunately, he didn't describe the same thing to four different officers (over an hour) and finally admitted he overhot his turn and was anxious to pull back and turn before more oncoming traffic. He didn't look in his mirror. If the police officers were less diligent, I would have been ticketed for rear ending a truck. My car is awful, and I ache as much from the terror of being twice smashed as from the whang. What irritates me the most is the wasted time while the man lied through his teeth. |

I got tired of looking just absolutely wonderful and of being such an inspiration
Where were you when I needed a comment?
DK, So glad you are alive.

| What a miserable experience and then to have the guy lie about it. Can't say much for those people behind you honking their horns and flashing their lights. |

| It was pretty frightening for not much except the potential of getting squashed. I think cell phones should be against the law in cars. Half those people shaking their fist at me were holding cell phones; they were probably not paying attention and were mad because they almost hit me. I think people lie a lot in traffic accidents. |

| Just caught a local newscast concerning tomorrow's TV changes that indicates Carol was probably on the money (is this an overused idiom?). It seems that many older TV's are not digital ready, and will require a box in addition to the cable. Don't know if that is the problem with comcast. I use U-verse. Getting it set up turned out to be agonizing, but I'm happy now that it is done.

| DK, I can imagine how you felt and the relief of being safe. Lying by the person at fault is hard to accept. Fortunately, they got the truth. Just glad you're okay. |

| The Comcast thing seems odd. There is nothing between the TV and their signal that comes in on their wire, why would it suddenly stop working because the air TV signal changes. My Direct TV signal works on a digital or analog TV because they are doing the conversion not the TV stations. |

| There was a time when people lived in small communities where everyone knew the plumber and the electrician and the grocer. When people behaved incorrectly, the rumors quickly spread and either they changed their ways or lost business. Today, it seems that "partial truths" are the order of the day. So far I can line up the television dtv conversion (initially they said you only needed the box; upon using the box one discoveres the antenna doesn't work either); comcast (I've had plenty of half truths from them including the cost of running new lines when I discovered the old were just fine); the guy who hit my car with his truck; and more. The lies are ofteen related to money. Someone profits and someone loses. |
