My niece does, too. Very Happy I'm a backward glancer. And, I hold the handle down long enough to get a good flush. Not that anyone needs to know that! LOL!!

Every time the automatic flushes go off, I wonder how many folks have dropped something important in one of them and could not fish it out before the flusher took off. Like having a ring fall off your finger, your keys fall from your pocket, etc. EW is right!

One time a woman on my husband's plane lost her diamond ring down the toilet and one of the crew, not my husband, reached down and got it out.

Not that's service above and beyond.

PostSubject: Re: Pay toilets   Pay toilets - Page 2 EmptySat Jun 06, 2009 3:32 pm

These toilet stories are fun. I have a couple. Traveling on a bus with my two year old, I carried all our stuff in a backpack with a flap. In the bathroom with my two year old by the hand, I leaned over to put paper on the toilet seat and dumped everything in the backpack in the filthy public toilet. I won't go into the retrieval...

Another time, fastidious as always, I reached up with my foot to flush the toilet and lost my brand new shoe in the toilet bowl as it fell off in the process.

A friend of mine on train lost her cell phone in the train bowl - lost forever with a whoosh.

There are a slug of stories regarding unisex bathrooms....

And I like the kind where a lady sits by the money tray and hands out towels and keeps the bathroom clean for whatever tip one chooses to leave.

DK

I hope you had more shoes along.

I hate toilets.
I dropped a phone down our home toilet once. I fished it out and threw it in the garbage.

Our kids never knew for years there were toilets in stores. I
told them to go before we went to town. If they said they had to go at town, I'd say, "Wait until we get home. "

They always waited.

The bad day was when our sewer backed up into our house. It came through the powder room toilet.

It was unspeakable and cost over $11,000.00 to repair.

When our daughter was little she stayed away from our toilet. She had a friend visiting who loved the toilet.
I found them playing in the toilet. I was not pleased.

Jonah, our grandson lived with us for four months when he was three. We had some friends over for dinner. We were visting after dinner--trying to act civilized, when Dave went to check on Jonah.

I heard him say, "Jonah where did all of that water come from?"

I went and looked and said, "Use your head, the toilet bowl looks a bit low to me."

The days of outhouses were better--far better.

Rings should not fall off. That is a sign they are too large. They need ro be resized.

I would be embarassed to ask someone to fish in a toilet for my ring. I would siimply absorb the loss.

It would be considerable too. I hope that flier left him a tip.

It took a while for the plumber to get the hot and cold water correct for our northwoods house. There was no cold water in the shower and they could not figure out why. I thought I had it figured out one day and called to tell them my great discovery. "The water in our toilet is hot, so that must be why there is no hot water in the shower." I was so proud of myself until they stopped laughing. They said, "We always put hot water to the toilets in the northwoods so they don't freeze up in the winter."

They did finally get the hot water to the shower, but every once in a while when someone else is staying at our cabin, they'll call in disbelief. "I think there is hot water in the toilets!"

And it has worked. They have never frozen.

Carol,

That is funny. I thought hot water froze faster than cold water.

I must have thought wrong.

The airlines have destroyed toilet fun for kids. In the days of rail. the wast would empty onto the tracks. As a kid I would kneel in front of one, hold the handle to open, and watch the speeding tracks roll by. You cant see America from the air..travel by rail was fun...ah hell.

Thanks, I thought of this off and on all night.

I am looking into litigation for you Carol. I think your plumbers led you astray. How do you heat your water?

Seems rather pricy to heat water to flush down a toilet.

Also, what keeps the water from cooling off?

I even googled toilets last night. Now I am really wondering about this. My niece's husband is a plumber, so I'm going to ask him, because now I'm beginning to think our plumber told me an untrue story.

This is not a fancy cabin, believe me. Cabins and luxury don't quite go together, but some conveniences are necessary. I was the general manager on the building project with the help of my construction worker son. This is really bothering me now. I also pay the bills for the place and they are not high. The construction is very energy efficient.

Now I'm thinking someone paid a joke on us, but "why" is a question that has been on the tip of my tongue since I was four years old.

Darn, the places one goes when one is on a messageboard.

I didn't mean to rile you up, Carol. I went to bed and Dave was half asleep. I said , "Which freezes faster hot or cold water?"

He said, "Naturally cold water."

I said then "Why do I think hot water freezes faster?"

He said " Old Wives Tale."

I showed him this web site and he was surprised.

This is too funny.

Here is a link to hot water in toilet problem.

I do not appreciate plumbers.

I don't like them anywhere near my property.

They are a most expensive waste of time and energy and money.

One time I accidentally let a diaper go down the toilet.

Toilet clogged--called plumber. He came and shoved a stick down my toilet and said, "Can't get it."

This was Friday. He walked about my kitchen waving his toilet stick and said, " I will come back on Monday and try again. Hope I don't have to dig up your yard ."

We called another plumber who had that diaper out in 5 minutes.

All plunbers are not created equal.

Back to rings falling off,. A very important tip. Make sure your rings fit properly.

We frequently had people come into our jewelry store who could not remove their rings. Edward would cut them off.

Then there were those whose rings were too big. If your rings are getting loose and you don't have time to resize them. don't wear them on vacaton.

If you are in a cold place your finger will shrink and the ring will be even bgger.

Just get a cheap ring to wear and you won't need to risk loosing your valuable ring.

My rings have been chopped off more than once. The problem is arthritis in my fingers and they fluctuate in size. For a long time I didn't wear any rings, and then the jeweler put a spring type piece in each of them that would adjust to my finger.

The last time my husband cut them off with a power tool. Not a good idea. Those things get hot.

Boiling water cools faster than hot water (heat is lost as the steam is driven off). When hot water approaches zero, the bubbles of air have been driven out and a solid mass of ice forms more quickly than the cold water full of bubbles of air (the ice forms around these bubbles, which takes longer).

I will too, Carol, You performed a valuable service-- you stimuated thought about life.

That, according to my Literature teacher was the first function Literature was to perform.

In fact you aroused emotion and kindled imagination. Now we will see if it has the power to survive. lol!

That was a very, very kind thing for her to do and will not be forgotten. I did get the impression she understood the predicament I was in, perhaps a family member had been where I was.

Carol
What a kind woman. I was a travel plaza and there was a long line at the ladies. When my turn came the first stall to vacate was the handicap stall. I looked down the line and asked if anyone would needed a handicap stall. There was. The lady and the person helping her thanked me.

Not a single person protested for me letting them "cut line".

What was nice was after that, before I left someone else in line did the same thing when her turn came up and the handicap stall was empty again.

BTW - I see those locked empty stalls on a regular basis. I don't know what psycho people do that. As a matter of fact, the truck stop we just left this morning had one. When I see those I report them to the janitorial staff. They usually roll their eyes and say "not again".

Jo Elle,

The faucet handle has germs on it. The toilet handle does too.

I am very aware of the germ issue, I wash up (and shower) in truck stops. I have to be extra aware. I am very careful about washing my hands correctly (after my time as a medical tech I became a hand washing nut). We also carry sanitizer on the truck.

I never touch toilet handles or faucets with my hands ... or the doors.

My peeve is that many women don't seem to realize that those self flushing toilets have a manual button that can be used if the auto-flush doesn't work. I have on several occasions heard a woman telling her friend (seems that other than truck drivers, women really do rarely visit the bathroom alone) that her toilet won't flush. I've probably taught a dozen women how to use those manual buttons.

My issue with the auto sinks are that: 1) they don't stay on long enough to properly wash your hands 2) you can not control the temperature 3) the water flow is often little more than a sprinkle.

The way to keep from spreading germs is by proper hand washing. Perhaps we are not touching a germ infested water handle ... but I've yet to see any woman properly wash their hands with those kind of faucets.

PostSubject: Re: Pay toilets   Pay toilets - Page 2 EmptySun Jun 07, 2009 10:33 am

A "Pay toilet" story I heard years ago that was associated with opportunity.

A man down on his luck had just one dime in his pocket, and an urgent need to use the toilet. He stood at the door to the pay toilet that required a dime. That dime was intended to help him get something to eat but the urgency to relieve himself was too strong. Just as he was about to place the dime into the slot, a man came out of the toilet next to him and held the door open. He was exhilarated. Not only did he feel better, but the fact that he still had the dime made him feel lucky. He went to the nearest slot machine, put in the dime and hit the jackpot. He was ecstatic. He took most of that money and invested it in a new stock offering that shot up fast. He kept investing and before long he was a millionaire.
He was invited to speak at a forum for people who made it rich and told his story.
“So,” said a person in the audience, “You owe your riches to that lucky dime.”
“No,” he replied, “I owe it to the person who opened the door.”
