| Betty, I had the following message from mystery writer Leigh Lundin. It seems someone asked if he knew about you. I don't, no. Dick Stodghill mentioned her in the comments in the Criminal Brief column I did about Aggie. http://criminalbrief.com/?p=2056#comment-11024 Leigh is a good guy so I gave him your email address. I'm sure it isn't anything bad like a bill collector or a process server or I wouldn't have. |

| Dear Dick, I found the words you wrote. You are a kind and gentleman man. I thank you from my heart's bottom. Two days ago, I went out in the rain. There were two pitt bulls hanging around my chicken's house. I know where they live. They had caved in the wire of the house and our free range rooster, Cogburn, was no where to be seen. I thought that he was dead. I bundled all my anger and courage into one movement and drove to the home of the pitt bulls. I banged and banged on the door. Finally, a man peeped out. Ah! I held my breath in. Then I said, " Your dogs have just killed my rooster and destroyed my chicken's house." He eyes went wide. Oh, it was early! He stood there in his underwear and said, "I am sorry." He said it more than one time. The dogs who did the deed, were coming up on his porch and smiling at me. I told them they knew they did the terrible murder and stomped off. Today, the rooster Cogburn came home. Wounded, wings not working right, tail feathers gone and a little shocked and scared. I have to wonder what courage it took for one lone rooster to live through the attack of two pitt bull dogs. My David is a chicken whisperer, it seems. He talked and talked to Cogburn and finally, on his own, he went into the cage the David had put on the back of the pickup truck. David covered him up with a blanket, put the food and water in there for him and he is resting. Live is so tenuous and so wonderful. Never will any one be able to tell me about bird brains. I know people not half as smart. Love, Betty |

| Betty,
What an odeal! Talking to your neighbor in his underwear---was it long or short, red or white, boxer or brief?
I am so glad Cogburn is all right. You are right about the brain part. and all of the rest of it too. |

| How horrible for Cogburn! The owner of the pit bulls is lucky he has you for a neighbor. Here, the dogs would probably have been shot. Did he at least offer to fix the chicken house? |

| I think Rooster Cogburn would appreciate it if you wrote his story of survival. Maybe even make Wooffer the one that saved him from the pit bulls... |

| Brew is right. I'm sorry it happened, but now you need to write the story of one tough rooster. |

| Dear Dick, Alice, Zada and Brew, I have not written anything much of late because my eye has been turned to growing vegetables and fruit and making a living. Sometimes my heart longs to write a story. Mostly, I do not have the time it takes to do it. Writing, for me, is like dreaming. A time apart from working. Sometimes when I cannot sleep, I will my self to connect to an old dream and follow the old dream down to sleep. I will try to write the story of Cogburn. Brew, he cannot have Wooffer save him. He saved himself. Truth has to be there or I could not write it. I will start a thread called Cogburn and write a sentence. It will be a beginning. Thank you all for your beautiful hearts. Love, Betty |
