Today should have been my brother's 70th birthday. We lost him years ago after Viet Nam.

I miss my brother, too, Alice. He died much too young, only forty-three. This is a photo of my nephew, who looks just like him. He was only eight when his dad died:

creates music...So Sorry about your brother I lost one tragically in 1986 he was 31 yrs old.

My brother died in 2002, Alice. My nephew is twenty-one and my mum loves him to bits.

Alice and Shelagh,

My heart goes out to you both. Your brothers were both very lucky to have you as sisters during their too-brief passage through this plane. I'm sure they knew it, even yours, Alice, who I know had a very difficult life. The difference we make in the lives of others is not easily quantifiable. Tragically, sometimes it is not enough to move mountains.

My heart goes out to those with family losses. I was 35 and my stepsister was 44 when she was murdered. It was heinous and that shocking loss has never "quieted" but has vivid memories. The most poignant was going to her grave many years after her transition and seeing a wreath with all the grandchildren she never knew from the marriages of her children she was not here to attend.

I think the death of V.P. Biden's son brings these young deaths to mind and heart anew.

My heart also goes out to VP Biden and his family. Political differences aside, I know Biden is a good man and a good father who always put his family first. His son was a rising star in his own right and his death truly tragic. I hope that God grants all afflicted by such losses, and especially our friends here, peace.
