You've obviously been out of education for awhile, because this is pure Critical Race Theory, a very well funded and powerful grievance study field in academia. If you're so inclined, look it up, as well as whiteness studies, white privilege, and the Unfair Project. The executive summary is that whiteness studies are all about how white people have oppressed and continue to oppress people of color (whatever that means -the academics lump all people of color together), and how white Christians in particular continue to oppress and offend with thousands of micro-aggressions, a white Santa being one. I'm not joking; hundreds of millions of federal dollars fund this stuff now. People with degrees in it get six-figure government jobs directing more study in it (when they don't get jobs as Diversity Officers in the private sector). So of course this seeps into popular culture; Slate and the Atlantic always run with this stuff.

Anyhow, these academics would take great offense at you saying "what's the point of arguing about this stuff." It's what they live for, and they don't consider it "arguing" -they consider it instructing us.
