Our own Victor Lopez is featured in a Letter to the Editor about my article, "Proud to Be an American" in today's issue of the Spotlight magazine.

A couple of corrections, though, for the record and for our friends here. I am not Cuban born, as the editors noted for some strange reason. My parents and all of my family hail from Spain (Galicia, specifically, in the North West) and I was born in Argentina, where my parents lived for some 20 years before immigrating here. I like to say that I am a Spaniard by blood, Argentine by birth and an American by choice and by the grace of God and this great country.

A second minor correction for Joe's sake. I'm originally a Queens boy (Queens College, St. John's University) until my wife and I married. I never lived in the Great Borough of Broolyn, but did attend Brooklyn Technical High School--then and now a true gem of an institution. That is where I met my life-long best friend, Ken Ansley, who is a full-blooded Brooklynite as well as a Technite.  Ken was also the co-author of my first book a zillion years ago, the best man at my wedding and one of God's best creations. I'll gladly be mistaken for him any day of the week--my gain and his great, great loss--but he no longer lives in Brooklyn. But I'll gladly consider myself an honorary Brooklynite if Joe (and the borough) do not object. Though after my "The Subway" poem, I'm not so sure I'm still welcomed there.

I know no one cares, but I just can't help myself. (Be grateful I don't check in too often. )

So now Victor, you grew up in Brooklyn, doing all the things boys do growing up there.

I don't care where he grew up. He grew up good and that's what matters most to me.

Your article was compelling on many levels. Captain Amici and I have more than you may think in common, including our status as naturalized citizens and immigrants who came here in pursuit of a better life. Immigrants are often the most patriotic (perhaps overly so at times) precisely because we appreciate both the freedom and opportunities our adoptive country provides, and we are loyal to her because she welcomed us and provided those opportunities with no strings attached. And that is one of the many reasons we are so grateful for the men and women in uniform who are the guardians and protectors of those freedoms and of the country we so love.
