is it legal to write a book of misinformation

hi, i tried googling lotsa variations of : publish publishing misinformation false information author book, etc, and the only site I found with the answer I was looking for I'd have to buy the answer. I'm not planning on doing this, just wondering is it legal to for example to write a book about dieting and give misinformation? If not, who get's in trouble if not both the author and the publishing co?
