Joe,
You are so right. Andy was riveting as Matlock also.
We have the entire series.

His program was a regular for our family. It was a family-oriented program with humor and moral lessons for the young. He is the type of person one would want as a friend. He will be missed.

I remember seeing this the first night it aired. We had always watched Danny Thomas, too.
From RIP Andy Griffith: http://www.deadline.com/2012/07/r-i-p-andy-griffith/
Ron Howard on Andy Griffith: "...About Griffith, who played Howard’s father on The Andy Griffith Show, Howard told me exclusively: “His love of creating, the joy he took in it whether it was drama or comedy or his music, was inspiring to grow up around. The spirit he created on the set of The Andy Griffith Show was joyful and professional all at once. It was an amazing environment. And I think it was a reflection of the way he felt about having the opportunity to create something that people could enjoy. It was always with respect and passion for the opportunity and really what it could offer people in a very unpretentious and earthy way. He felt he was always working in service of an audience he really respected and cared about. He was a great influence on me. His passing is sad. But he lived and a great rich life.”

That "Who stepped on Ma?" line had everybody in our household rolling on the floor (and, as I recall, it was a pretty large household. We had, for the time, a pretty large TV, so all Mom's relatives would drop in to watch with us).

I remember one show where Opey killed a mother bird and
Andy had him take in the baby birds and raise them to show
him what he did was dead wrong killing the mother, he named
them inkin, blinkin I forget the other two and at the end of the
show Opey was sad and happy at the same time to let the young
birds go on on their own, very interesting story, a lesson for all
children, respect wildlife....
Cheers..Joe...

I watched the Andy Griffith show and did research on a murder book for Lane as I recovered from triple coronary by-pass surgery. Seems like yesterday.
Now both of them are gone-so- -sad.

Joe, the episode about the mother bird was exact one I was thinking of. I love that last scene after Opie releases the baby birds he'd mothered. He mentions how empty the cage is, and if I remember right, the camera pans to all the trees and we can hear birds singing. Andy says, "Yes, but aren't the trees nice and full."
A beautiful story, a beautiful series, one that every new parent should be required to watch.
He'll be missed.
