| Your story in Forever Travels is a good family story. Maybe something the same but different. |

| Maybe. I have more stuff on Mom's family than on Dad's - Maybe a short story about Ailcy's daughter, Martha Ann or a funny one about my Mom's brothers.
Still, a story about the Levingston's would give some continuity.

| I've been working on an idea for a family story.
My dad's family, like my mom's, were great storytellers. My dad didn't tell that many, but they were always interesting. I was remembering one of them, about how his father called him in to his office and told him that since he was ten years old, it was time for him to find a way to help with the family income. My grandfather went on to explain that a boy becomes a man by taking on a man's responsibilities. The rest of Dad's tale involved how he went about setting up his first business, and what the outcome was. As I was recalling it, I started thinking about my grandfather, and his stories, and am starting to imagine how my grandfather might very well have reminded my dad that his (my grandfather's) father, Samuel, served on his own father's ship as it crossed the Atlantic, when Sam was only eight years old.
There's a possible tie-in to the story I wrote for the last book, and Dad's story is one I know quite well.
I'm thinking it just might work.

| OMG, look what I found. I was thinking more about this family story thing, and wondering where my files were on Dad's family - I have them on the old PC, but it isn't hooked up right now, because I'm using the monitor with my new little netbook. I thought I might do a google search - just for dates, etc. I typed in my great-grandfather's name - the 8-year old in "Belfast to St. Joe," and this was the first thing that came up: http://www.angelfire.com/tx/RandysTexas/levingston.html - Quote :
- LEVINGSTON, SAMUEL HIRAM, “SHIP CARPENTER”, (Plot 2; Evergreen Cemetery), Born: October 15, 1830. Deceased: September 11, 1911. Enlisted in the service of the Confederate States of America, in March, 1861, and served “Honorably” as a “Private” in “Merriman’s” Orange County “Coast Guard”, “Merriman’s Company”, “Local Defense Troops”, C.S.A. Cotton Clad Confederate Paddle Wheel Gunboats. He was detailed as “Ship Carpenter” by General P. O. Hisbert. He helped build the ram on C.S.A. Gunboat “Mississippi” at New Orleans, Louisiana, where he went on military orders and afterwards continued on different boats as “Ship Carpenter” and on special duty. He was “Honorably” discharged from said Confederate service in June, 1865, by the “disbanding” of the “Marine Department of Texas”. At which time he held the rank of “Carpenter subject to order from the Marine Department”. ( Obtained from “Southern Cross of Honor” application…his writing). He applied for a Confederate Pension from the State of Texas.
According to this, he died in 1911, three years before my dad was born. I have seen a photograph of him, though, when he was quite old. He had a very long, very full white beard. I'm thinking I can use this, or some of it, to help make the connection between the stories. Ann |
