Do you consider yourself a successful writer?
What would make you feel successful?

No I don't...to the first part of your question. A New York Times best seller...to the second part of your question.

I guess when someone tells me that something I've written changed their lives in a positive way.

I felt successful when a fellow in front of me in line at a bookstore was buying one of my books.

I've achieved more than I set out to achieve. Now I'm looking forward to getting my life back and spending more time with my family. My first published book sold very few copies but was serialised on Preston Community radio in 2009, which gave some purpose to having written the book.
When I published Forever Friends, it received an excellent review from Apex reviews but did not meet the target of ten copies sold for every contributor. However, the book has now had 655 downloads on Kindle, which means it has made its target. The contributors did not want the book to make a substantial profit, but they wanted their work to be read. We seem to have achieved that.
I have given away almost twenty thousand copies of my books for Kindle alone, not counting the thousands of free copies of the Literature & Fiction books on other websites (Smashwords, Nook, Sony and iPad).
The 10,500+ downloads of Mr. Planemaker's Flying Machine for Kindle motivated me to write the sequel. If there is no interest in the second in the series, there will not be a third.
I published Alice's book last February and the book is about to be offered for free download over the Christmas period. It should help to get the book out to a substantial number of readers.
If I don't do anything else, I know that I did my best and that's as much as I can do.

I would add that I have had confirmation several times over from people who read A Time for Myth. Some of those were uplifted simply by learning about what makes a hero, and realizing that they met the criteria (everybody does!); some for more specific things, like those who told me, or wrote to tell me, that they realized that they, too, had suffered from symptoms of PTSD, and were relieved to learn what had been troubling them.
Now, if I can achieve the same through my fiction....

And, Alice, I am certain that PP&P was tremendously helpful to so very many who have to deal with Parkinson's.

Betty's first story in the Wooffer's Woods series is currently #21 in Kindle Store > Free Books > Fiction > Fairy Tales
I'm sure she will be along soon to tell us how the other free stories are doing and about the oodles of downloads!

Thank you, Ann
It persuaded a few to have DBS for Pd and thus improved their lives.
I am glad I wrote the book even though it is not a best-seller.

Dear Shelagh, Please tell me how you find that figure. I have looked and see that Old Agnes has sold 97 copies today, A Christmas Under The Old Oak Tree has had 116 downoads. You know I am over the moon with anyone I do not have an arm lock on reading my works of their own free will!. Snort!!!

You can see all your stories in the top 100 free books here on amazon.com:
On the KDP reports page, to see all your downloads on .co.uk, pull down the "view report for" menu (amazon.com) to see the other amazon sites.

You know, Shelagh, that my heart is bursting. For Larry, Curly and Moe to be number 18, even just for a little while, makes my nose run!
Such a day I have had! My David got me for Christmas the iphone 4 S. It is a wonder and a wonderful machine. I can do everything on it except type a book. I could do that if my thumbs were smaller! I have a lot to learn.
I will go to bed this night with a smile on my face. I have smiled so much this day that my jaws are beginning to cramp up!
Love, Betty

Dear Alice, Joy is nothing unless it is shared and spread all around. Thank you for being my friend and being glad in my joy of this day.
One think I know about you, Alice, is that you do not have one mean bone in you. You are always beautiful.

Not true. Alice has:
Cheered on a fellow forum member when he wished death on me. Went behind my back to see how much I got paid for a book.
I may be may things I've never stooped to Alice's level. She has mean bones in her body, several petty, nasty mean bones.

I did not ask how much you were paid.
Noone wished you dead either. Tell the truth please. Thank you!
Back on topic please.
