| So, who else is a risk-taker like the new kid on the block???
Why did you write a book??? That's what I want to know.....as a newly published author I am interested in you sharing your personal journey as a writer! I did not join to "click", vick or trick or anything else but be a part of something greater than myself.
Yeah, we have careers, some have jobs and some are in between some stuff....but what many of us share is writing, being authors.
I'll even start and go first......spiritual fulfillment! Years of just talking about it...I wanted to BE about it! I did not write a book to get rich or even become a best seller. If that comes then it is a bonus. Amazingly, the responses and reviews to my book have given me a new sense of true humility!
Next - book #2.......

| I was a very active person--worked full time, walked over 4 miles per day. climbed mountains, entertained, told children's stories at church , etc.
Then I was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. I have had a remarkable life and God has blessed me. I wanted to spread the good news.
I had fun writing and seeing the reactions of folks to my true story.

Book #3 is from 2005 and on. I'm looking forward to that one, Alice. Did we really first get to know each other in 2006? That's when my book was published, and I joined the original motley crew that has stayed together over three, at least, message boards, surviving trolls and flamers and a false identities. We've lost a couple of those old friends, and others have come in for a reason or a season and have moved on, but several of us have managed to stay together. You are a big reason for that. You keep our spirits up. I cannot wait to see what you will be writing in this next book. I know it will be uplifting. How can it not be? It looks like we have new voices coming in these days. I look forward to getting to know them better. This is a good place to be, thanks in large part to you effervescent contributions. Ann |

| Hmmmm. There's a long version and a short version. The short version is that I always wanted to write a book and when I did, it was accidental. Recording my experiences for posterity caused a family member to recommending seeking publication. I did, and it got published. I didn't know enough about publishing to check out the publisher nor did I realize the importance of editing. Although the cover and the print looks good, the errors are a constant reminder of the mistakes I made. I am pleased with my second and third book. Excellent feedback and editing by the publisher's editor. I call it challenge editing. His comments caused me to rethink how I wrote a sentence by asking: "What did you mean by that statement?" It was perfectly clear to me, but obviously not to the reader. Or, he would as me to use another descriptive word when I used the same word too often, especially in one paragraph. A good friend and fellow author wrote a great book. It was published by the same publisher as my first publisher, and is full of errors - a real distraction from what he tries to convey. Two words that drove me nuts were "irony" and "paradox" They are grossly overused and are a distraction.
The last publication happens to be the first thing I ever wrote. It is a children's story "Santaboy". I was excited about the idea of Santa and Mrs. Claus having a son and wrote the story, sending it off to publishers blindly. Got rejected and just filed the story away. My daughter in Virginia had read it years ago and asked me if I still had the manuscript. I did and she is responsible for it becoming an ebook on Amazon. I had written a song to go along with the story, as with the story, "Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer." I still had the music notes. My daughter Christine sings the song and it is part of the ebook presentation.
I am working on a true story about the life of a German soldier during WWII. I had discussed it with Dick Stodghill, and he said "write it and I will help you." Dick is no longer with us, however I know he would like the story as it is told from the viewpoint of a soldier. Dick's book, "Normandy 1944" is told from the viewpoint of a frontline soldier. I think it is safe to say that anyone who experienced war is not a proponent of making war.
I've not done much work recently on my story about my childhood, but expect to get back to it during the winter months. |

| Lee, sorry your thread got off topic for a bit. It happens around here. Sometimes, that's where the best stuff is, but you asked some specific questions of us.
As you may have perceived, by some recent threads, I started out as a teacher. I taught English - literature, language arts, and writing.
I taught in experimental programs, one of which was a public night high school for drop-outs. Those guys gave me some special challenges. To make a long story short, and because the old-timers here are already rolling their eyes, one of the solutions involved the person of Audie Murphy as a possible role model.
After a while, I started to think that the research I had done might make a good book. The result was A Myth in Action: The Heroic Life of Audie Murphy (more info on which you can learn at my website, a place you can easily find by looking at the bottom of my post and which Shelagh has recently had to point out, in my adage, I forget is there).
So I got engrossed in the shift from writing teacher to writer, and here I am, a retiree with too much time on her hands, which she tries to make up for by continuing to write.
Stick around. You will have fun.

| I started writing because I wanted an escape from the mundane, and often, depressing world. I'm a daydreamer and my mind wanders a great distance sometimes. I hope others find peace in the words I've strung together across the pages as well. |

| 10/15/2011 Lee... Let's see it's been a long journey, many of my friends here I have known for seven years, we all stick together and have that kind of friendship we would help each other. My first book published seven years ago is about a boy growing up in Brooklyn in a bi-racial family in the 1950's. My second book is a murder mystery that takes place in NYC. My third book is about a little boy and his cat, called Dusty. My fourth book published in 2010 is about one man's desire for freedom from Castro's reign of terror and trials and horrors of gaining his freedom from Cuba, this is based on a true story. All my books are listed on Amazon books. I have two books in the works , a new murder mystery based on my main character from my first murder mystery. The other book is a sequel to Dusty.. Cheers..Joe... |

Do you think you were right or wrong? Writing a novel might be hard work, but for a passionate writer, surely it's about enjoyment more then difficulty. |

| I am part of the group of authors who got to know each other from the PAMB after writing a story about clergy misconduct for a guy I reconnected with at a high school class reunion. I had always wanted to write a book, and never thought that the subject would be abuse. it took me 7 years to write that book. I'm faster at it now!
I was contacted by others who wanted to tell their stories of clergy abuse, and I helped two others write their stories. The woman I helped backed out of finishing the story after being pressured by her church. Then along came a guy who was abused by a priest when he was ten years old. I worked with him and the book was published in June.
I feel I keep getting better with my writing and now I'm working with a young guy who has had several kidney transplants since he was a baby. He wants to alert people to what can go wrong after vaccinating babies.
I've also written two short stories in Shelagh's anthologies, "Forever Friends" and "Forever Travels".
I love getting in the "zone" of writing and getting consumed by the story. I own a boutique in a tourist area, and the winter months are slow--a good time for writing!
I've met some wonderful life-long friends through writing! |

| It sounds quite brave to write a book about such difficult issues Helen. When I'm writing, I find that the project almost consumes me whole for a while, (before regurgitating me into a three-month pile of dirty dishes and laundry.)
It must take a strong willed person to write a survivor story and stay positive. |

| I knew I would write for publication when I was quite young. I was an avid reader and writer of short stories. I wrote diaries. I wrote letters that my friends said should be turned into books. I traveled. I experienced pain and joy, triumph and failure. I documented it all on slips of paper, in notebooks, and anywhere I could write at the time.
The catalyst to serious writing for publication was the five years I lived in S. Korea and traveled in Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East. I started a novel with a co-author somewhere around 1988 when I was sailing in the Caribbean. My co-author and I parted ways.
That was the book I published in 2006. I had been working on it for many years and three hurricanes in a row in Florida threatened my research materials and notes. It was then or never...
In 2007, I was inspired to write Ghost Orchid by the discovery of an exquisitely beautiful and mystical ghost orchid plant in Corkscrew Swamp. The story grew from the discovery and consumed me until finished.
I hoped the world would beat a path to my door; but soon realized that the accomplishment was in the writing - a courageous goal fulfillment. I am glad for those who have enjoyed reading my novels and short stories. I enjoy leading people to a new experience in the Everglades that adds enrichment to many lives.
I have short stories in several anthologies and miss the Amazon Shorts program that was a great opportunity to experiment. I also write a monthly column at www.swspotlight.com and an occasional article for www.examiner.com and suite101com

| I would add that my first publication with PublishAmerica in 2006 was at the suggestion of a friend who was looking for a publisher. I did no research but took her suggestion and was elated to have my manuscript "accepted." I had great edit help from their staff, the book cover was perfect, and I enjoyed successful book signings and sales until I learned that I didn't have a publisher but rather a "printer" who would print anyone's work and sell it back to the author. While I was in ignorance, I had a great time and learned from colleagues at the Publish America Message Board. There I became engaged in writing among diverse and interesting people many of whom are on this forum, several of whom have passed into the next experience after death, and several who I occasionally run into on facebook and other forums. All that I have learned and all the people I have met have enriched my life in amazing ways. |
