Say something--anything! Preferably something debatable. Thanks.

Sorry Alice.
I've been sitting at this sucker most of the day. Daniel has gone into the hidden valley and through the time portal while the Civil War rages back at his home. He has found himself in a place that seems to be precisely 100 years into the future, where he meets a young man named Johnny who is trying to get the courage to tell his family he wants a military career (He has done what most of his (and our) generation did as young men. As soon as he finished college, he joined the State (in this case, Texas) National Guard as a "weekend warrior," only in his case, he likes the structure and discipline, and wants to stay full-time. His family does not approve, so he and Daniel have these long talks around a campfire. This will go on, off and on, all through the Civil War. When Daniel goes to find him one last time, to say goodby, Johnny tells him he has transferred to an active unit, and will be going to Vietnam.
Anyway, my back aches and my feet are swollen, so I am going to bed early to watch this movie, which I recorded during the night last night:

Ann -so your story is a time-traveling one? Sounds great! I didn't know that. I look forward to reading it.

Ann,
I am worried about your swollen ankles. Take care and put them up.

They're OK now, Alice. I just wish I had had as much fun as Jimmy Buffett getting them in that condition. (Thanks for the laugh, Al.)
I sometimes do that when the writing is working. I forget to stand up and walk around for a while, until they are yelling at me to stop and have pity.
Yes, LC, there are some characters in the books from the late 20th and early 21st centuries, and once in a while, they run into each other.
The movie was a good way to take a break and keep working at the same time. The character, Johnny, that I've been writing about today, is only in his early 20's at this point, but he comes back into the second and third books, a bit older, having stayed in the military throughout the 1960's, and taking several tours of duty in Vietnam. During his last tour there, he probably looked something like this guy:
I was a little disappointed that the TV version cut a couple of my favorite scenes - nothing vital to the story, just some bits that I liked about the character - whose last name, strictly coincidentally, was Thorne.
All in all, it has been a good day.
