50 years ago..??

Me--about 61 years ago!

We talk here sometimes about how fast time goes these days. I wonder if it goes so fast for my granddaughter, Jaycie. She will be two in March. In high school, our history teacher had us do a timeline, based on our expected life span. Fifteen isn't that much of 75 or 80. The farther along that line, the more the percentages change, the faster time seems to be moving.

I went to see The King's Speech with my friend who is originally from Jamaica. She said she was about nine when Queen Elizabeth took the thrown after King George died. My friend had just graduated high school when Jamaica became independent from England. That was about 50 years ago. She spent the first seventeen years of her life as a British subject and the next few years before leaving for the U.S. as a Jamaican citizen and then became a U.S. citizen. Of course, we did a lot of talking about our early, young adult years and how different we lived in our two very different countries.

The first 30 years of both our lives, however, were spent building a family and security for that family. The next twenty or so sort of rolled along on their own. The next 30? Well, we can do with it whatever we choose, really. That's a pretty awesome thought.
