| Who of you wishes to be accused of adultery then killed over it? As you sat in jail pondering your end, would you want anyone to care? Very curious. |

| I am thankful that I was born in a western culture. I cannot imagine what my thoughts would be if I found myself in such a sorry state. |

| It's common practice in the Middle East, I understand. Extreme conservatism in politics and religion and extreme patriarchy go hand in hand. Not all of Islam is so right wing. One can be in favor of cultural diversity without condoning the acts of the extremists.
The right wing of most cultures, it seems, is hierarchical and patriarchal, dualistic and polarized.

| Not I. I would want others to care because it would not be true.
It does take two people to commit adultery and I do not intend to be one of them.
I have known true love and would not jeopardized that wonder for anything.
True love is beautiful. I have known it and value it.
Love, Carol |

| True, but from what I've heard of Tom, I would hardly call him a right wing extremist.

| Thank you for your humane answers. If my husband committed adultery, I would not want him killed either. |

| A spouse is often the parent of children.
I do agree that the middle east does not hold a patent on cruelty to women. Many cultures and religions throughout the world, including Asian and Western cultures and religions, have practices toward women that seem barbaric. Personally, I think the practice of many wives is barbaric; yet, it originated to protect women where there were insufficient men or to guarantee the production of a male heir in case one of the wives was barren. How about the Chinese practice of binding women's feet so they would hobble along behind men (and unbound, many country women do the same today). Without being graphic, there are many other inhumane practices toward women.
Understanding the history of cultural practices, many dating to pagan times and before recorded history, helps shed light on why such seeming inhumane treatment of women continues.
Women in this country have put up with rapes and beatings from their spouses where the husband's religion made him the head of the household over a wife that must obey or suffer the consequences.
I believe the world should issue a hue and cry for human rights to make cultures and societies aware that a better way exists; but we have to provide examples that attract believers. We still have many flaws in our own society. |

| I think it is high time, this all came to a halt. Part of the problem is women toleratng it. Women should think of a way to end this.
Thank you for bringing up religion. Until my church takes a different view of women, I will stay away, After all, God made women too. |

| Another thought--these men are reared by women. How do they get so mean to women? Maybe we need to rethink our child-rearing practices.
How about not hitting kids?
How about being kind to them.
What a concept! |

Apathy, pure apathy! We need to end it yesterday. |

| There are international organizations that are seeking the humane treatment of women throughout the world. However, they have many implediments to their success, mainly men. |

| The International Women's Rights Action Watch (IWRAW) was organized in 1985 at the Third World Conference on Women in Nairobi, Kenya, to promote recognition of women’s human rights under the United Nation’s Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (the CEDAW Convention), an international human rights treaty. IWRAW was founded on the belief that the human rights of women and girls are essential to development and that equality between women and men will only be achieved through use of international human rights principles and processes. Since its inception, IWRAW’s program has expanded to encompass advocacy for women’s human rights under all the international human rights treaties.

| Thank you DK. 25 years is a long time, but not long enough. Why have women tolerated this? We must be stupid. |

Maybe we need to rethink our child-rearing practices. We who? Who are you addressing? We don't stone people here. Are you addressing women in the Middle East? You need to go on a different board. And face it -they LIKE it. You don't keep on keeping on for thousands of years and NOT like it. And they love their burkas, it makes them feel "feminine," I've read interviews with women who said as much. Trying to bring democracy and equal rights to the Middle East is such an ill-advised idea it's breath-taking. They don't WANT it. |

Trying to bring democracy and equal rights to the Middle East is such an ill-advised idea it's breath-taking. They don't WANT it. Women are the same the world around. I had a friend whose husband used to punch her lights out whenever he felt like it. She would not leave him, I quit being her friend. Wearing a burka is fine if they want to do it. I don't equate wearing a burka to being beaten and stoned to death. |

I don't equate wearing a burka to being beaten and stoned to death. It's not for you or me to tell them what to equate, though. Clearly they think this is the way to go. So have at it. I don't care. |

| http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100707/ap_on_re_mi_ea/ml_iraq Why are we there? There is no "war." It's just a bunch of tribal peoples killing each other. They love this stuff. Blowing up buildings, stoning "adulterers," whatever. Let them. Why do you care? And more to the point, what are you supposed to do about it? |

| LC asked: Why do you care? Obviously I am insane. It seemed festive and humane to care when I read about it on CNN.
