Hi..

Just read a report on CNN on how younger workers
are being hired over older workers, I guess many
companies don't understand older workers have a
more experience than younger ones, as I was
told once, two years ago, " Your over qualified ." I
knew what that meant, too old, or they felt you
wanted too much money, which isn't true What is
your thought ? Read the article..

Cheers..Joe

Joe,

You are right. The older worker has more experience and is reliable.

I would hate to try for a job now. But guess what? When they denied me disabilty--they said, "get another job."

Sure sure! Couldn't make it to the one I had. Many times couldn't get home so slept at my desk.

Life is easy for the deniers of disability.

I was surprised that "younger" in this article was up to 54 years old. People start getting discriminated against after 40, which is why that's the minimum age at which you can file an EEO complaint.

At any rate, why the surprise? Do you think the average 55+ yr old has the same ambitions as a 25 yr old? Experience isn't everything.

LC,

You are so right, but what should the older worker do if laid off?

They still need to eat.

Unemployment runs out, etc.,

My mother in law still works and she is nearly 90.
Her ambition is not lacking in the least.

I need to find something for her to do--she decorates my yard with artificial flowers, I loathe artificial flowers outdoors. Oh well.

In my opinion, if the person is reasonably fit and motivated, they should be given a chance.

LC,

Thanks for saying we can argue.

I am very curious. You do not like non-workers to have benefits or health-care.

If an old person loses their job should they simply call Kevorkian or what?

Alice..

I beleive LC doesn't like older workers,
older workers work harder than young ones,
I've been around young ones and a majority
like to play around or their attitude is there's
always another job around the corner. I've
worked with people 55 up to 65 , they give
1000% percent and many companies never,
ever acknowledge this, some managers prefer
to hire busty young dolls to boost their egos.
I have witnessed this at Kohls where I worked
the manager was a stud master even though he
was married, he preferred young ladies with tight
short skirts and their bossoms hanging out of
their blouses, yes I've seen discrimination against
older workers and it's time they take a stance,
grey panters unite.....

Joe,

When you are right, you are right. I don't care how young one is old-age comes faster than they think it will.

Young today--old tomorrow.

Let the young discriminate against the old, they will get their due.

The so called golden years are great.

The young people hate us. Why? We own houses. We worked like dogs to keep our houses clean.

They will show us, they throw everything everywhere. On top of that we have the gall to want a job.

I heard all about it when I worked. I worked to help the kids through college. Oh well can't be right all of the time.

My tutor as to the faults of the Elders was a young drug addict. She skipped work frequently and embezzeled when she was there. She is old by now. Ha Ha!

This country?

Senator Bird pased away. Dave just told me the news and Jonah asked, "was he a robin?"

Reminded me of my first neuroligist by that name, He was a brilliant diagnostican, as a practiconer he was limited.

I hope he improves with age.

It's time to make new laws, all politicians
get one term , that's it. These old politicals
have been in for so long, some 30, 40, 50,
60 years , they don't even know what century
their living in....

How about two?

It will take one term to learn the job.

PostSubject: Re: YOUNGER WORKERS VERSUS OLDER WORKERS   YOUNGER WORKERS VERSUS OLDER WORKERS EmptyMon Jun 28, 2010 1:50 pm

Hi Joe and welcome back Alice.

For what it’s worth I think these companies are crazy. This is what I think on the subject: When career ambition is no longer a prime motive it is said that you enter a period of transition which starts at the peak of your career and ends in retirement – it’s called the third age. When launching a career in the third age people go in fully aware and far better prepared. What they lack in ambition they make up for with motivation because they have chosen the career and made sure it fits with their interests. They have a lot to offer and it’s a different offer to that of younger employees.

Employers find that 3rd age staff settle and train younger staff and are also appreciated by customers. This means that the 3rd age candidate does not have to compete with younger applicants. Many employers seek them out to ensure a better balance of their workforce and to ensure that their workforce reflects the profile of their customers.

In the UK a number of national companies’ pioneered programmes to encourage and retain the employment of older workers. American companies have been at it for years. Most celebrated in the UK is the DIY chain B&Q. Over a fifth of their staff are aged over 50. Another is the supermarket chain is Asda which offers its ‘Asda Goldies’ programme that includes flexible working and a weeks unpaid leave on the birth of a grandchild.

Ideal careers for the 3rd age include: Airport baggage, passenger and hand luggage screener. International terrorism makes daily headlines, and fear of financial insecurity is matched only by concern for our physical safety. A mature dependable approach and the skills to handle situations delicately are highly rated in the security industry. Parenting coach. Parents with grown up children especially with experience in social work might be interested in becoming a coach for families. Government inspectors. Workers can sometimes capitalize on their experience in an industry by moving into a regulatory job. Dog walker. Why not keep fit and at the same time supplement your income?

Joe,

Do we want the old folks to work or not?
Do you work?

I wonder if there will ever be enough jobs for everyone.

Maybe the old people should sell books.
