There is no better word than "said" because it gets the point across while being close to unnoticed. For an excellent (and humorous) article on the subject don't miss today's www.criminalbrief.com

Great article, Dick.
In my book I have a chapter titled The Targets where a lot of dialogue takes place.

A friend told me to remove the saids--my editor let them stand.

I use said, replied...a few times whispered. As Dick said, "All other tags slow the story down. The reader gets lost, and will stop reading...they lose the plot."

Best tags:

SAID REPLIED.
