"Hey good lookin', whatcha got cookin'? How about cookin' somethin' up with me?"

Wait, this is one guy writing to another guy, or maybe the same guy, so scratch that letter. And my apologies to Hank Williams. To Carol as well because she was being serious. I find that hard to do.

Dear Merri (specifically Night Merri),

I know you like staying up until all hours of the night, but it makes it very hard to wake up at 7:30am when you don't go to sleep until 3:00 or 4:00am. Take notes about your storyline, then go to sleep!!! You don't have to write it all right now.

Lovingly,
Merri (specifically Morning Merri)

Quit procrastinating and get to work!

You don’t have to clean the fridge or straighten the files right now; you’ve very happily put them off for months. If you’ve put them off this long, you can put them off long enough to get the first three chapters in your new novel written.

Quit staring out the window and get to work!

What would you write to yourself, and have delivered to yourself in April of 1989?

Run away and get as far away from home as you can get. Hop aboard a ufo, hide on a feighter, do anything you can, because the next ten years are gonna be hell.

If you can't get away, grit your teeth and hang in there. Just remember, there is a tomorrow, and sometimes it's better than the past.

Dear Vickie

You need a vacation from work so you can play again. It has been too long. You also need to start writing again. So do it!!!!

Today's letter would be like this,

Pam,
Get out and do something fun. You are getting older, you know.

In 1989, it would have been like this:

Pam,
Get out and play with the kids. They're getting older, you know.

Some things don't change that much.

Dear Shelagh,
I understand your letter to yourself. Imagine you have to remind your self to slow down once in a while. You do go like your hair is on fire...not in the panic I would, but on fire in the heart all the same. Sometimes I think of all the stuff that you do. It is too much for me. I know that I could not keep up.

If you were to walk along a sidewalk that had weeds and grasses growing in the cracks and the concrete was old and frayed along the edges, where would the sidewalk end.

Love,
Betty

(From Alice.)

Dear Alice,

Can't believe you are still above ground.  What are you trying to do?  Spend your kids inheritance?

Do something, anything beneficial--stay away from the doctors for awhile--take a break from surgeries.

Dear Merri,

It's a good thing that you're quitting the job at the counseling agency. Hearing all of the stories of neglect and abuse have numbed you to the horror of it all and you will soon hear one of the most horrific stories of abuse and you will respond by saying, "Is that all?" It will be the catalyst you need to make a major change in your life. Moving to Los Angeles will be a decision you will not regret. I know you're scared -- you've always done what everyone expected of you -- it's time to find out who you are and what you want to do with your life. Have courage!

Merri, thank you for sharing what must have been a painful time in your life. But it was also an awakening. Perhaps others will read your post and make the changes necessary to find the joy in their lives.

Thanks, Brenda. Of all the years Mel could have chosen, she picked 1989, and that just happened to be a year of turmoil for me. It needed to be an uncomfortable time, though. So much growth can take place during such times. I wouldn't trade what I learned that year for anything. Smile

Good letters, but Mel's turned into a suspense novel. Glad she included footnotes or I would have demanded more information. However, she did not reveal what happened at that friend's apartment. This letter is a good outline for a romance-suspense story.

I sure didn't intend for my letter to become so lengthy. I just started writing it, and it took on a life of it's own. And it became very personal. When I finally went to bed I couldn't sleep. I started thinking of my friend Andy and things that are best left in the past. Carol's original post certainly took on a new meaning for me. Perhaps this was a good exercise for me, maybe it was something I needed to work through.

I just wish I'd told the 1989 Mel to invest a few hundred in Microsoft. =)
