Thanksgiving Song Empty
PostSubject: Thanksgiving Song   Thanksgiving Song EmptyWed Nov 26, 2014 11:15 pm

There was a post on FB yesterday wondering why there was no Thanksgiving song.

An old Classmate of mine sent me a Thanksgiving greeting and we talked about how it was way back when.  I related to her my experience as a kid when my Aunt Ruth came each Christmas with the sleigh to take us kids for a sleigh ride.  It was a one-horse-open sleigh.  There were bells on the harness and when the horse trotted, the bells jingled.  It made me wonder when the song: Jingle Bells was written.  I did a search and found that a Pastor in Boston wrote the song in 1857 for Thanksgiving.  They must have had lots of snow at that time of year in the Northeast.  I suppose the snow in the Northeast occurring now is not that unusual.  Although there was a Thanksgiving song, it now belongs to Christmas.  I'm thinking that any song about Thanksgiving in these times would include some reference to a turkey.

This hymn was always sung at the Thanksgiving service at both Episcopal churches I have been a member of:  St Paul's in Orange, TX, and here in SA at St. George's

Second verse same as the first
only a little bit louder and a little bit worse -
do dah - do dah - day!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!

I'm thankful I got to spend another Thanksgiving on top of the dirt.

How could we forget this one?  It was one my brother's favorite songs.  He would sing it, acompanying himself on the guitar.  Someone had sent him the record.  It was not meant in a friendly way.  He was in Vietnam at the time.  Several of his old "friends" enjoyed sending him such things, thinking it would upet him.  Instead, he and his buddies found it hilarious and would play and sing it frequently to entertain the other members of their flight group.
