Warnings:  This article is about sex on TV.  It focuses on a recent Outlander episode, but it has nothing to do with Scotland or England or the history of those countries or cultures - promise.

What it does have to do with is a couple placed in the unusual circumstance of having to get to know each other on their wedding night, and the delightful and delectable way that situation was played on this particular episode of this particular show.

If you are intrigued, keeo reading through the diversions into the exploration of other shows that are exploring this area.  The article gets back to the main coulple after a few paragraphs.

I'd wanted to make this piece about both "Masters of Sex" and "Outlander" and how they're both interested in the ways that gender norms limit both men and women. That plan has two problems: First, it sounds like the topic of a very dry term paper, and second, the Sept. 20 episode of "Outlander," "The Wedding," melted my brain. It was that good -- and that different.

This was a long read so likely the reason no responses.  I found this a very well discussed approach to setting sexual scenes and keeping them in the context of the times in which the story is written.

I can't say that I am totally for realism since any story is a condensation of real life or would be boring.  However, a sexual scene that fits the context and enhances the understanding of characters is fully appropriate.

I believe it depends on the genre and timing of the novel and the target audience.  It is interesting to see the evolution of sexuality in cable television where just about anything goes.  The intellectual approach to being real in a contextual sense certainly is a cut above the daytime soaps that taught teenagers a romantic, dramatized view of relationships that had no relationship to reality.

This discussion is about writing that enlightens and entertains and where the plot is the primary focus.

Some writing is strictly for the purpose of sexual content and the plot is secondary, comparable to perhaps soft pornography.  That type of writing neither interests me as a genre nor in discussion.  However, erotica and heated romance novels are sellers.
