The Constitution is pretty clear on the requirements to be President. "Changing the rules" is an involved process.

Ted Cruz can be President. He was born in Canada to his mother, a US citizen, which makes him a US citizen.

I am in favor of changing the Constitution so someone who has been a naturalized citizen for twenty years can be President.

Doesn't this suggest that Ted Cruz, born to non-Canadian parents, is a natural born Canadian and a "subject" of the English monarchy?

Canadian citizens are not actual "subjects" of the UK monarch, and have not been since the Citizenship Act of 1947. Citizens of the UK are also no longer "subjects" of the monarch; they are citizens of the UK. Which makes Ted Cruz a citizen of Canada and the Commonwealth.

In other words, to stop anyone with allegiance to the Head of the Commonwealth, such as a Canadian, running for the office of President of the USA.

You can only be born once. The sovereign claims the loyalty of every member born on Commonwealth ground. Natural born citizens are those born in the country of the birth, irrespective of the nationality of their parents. If you are born in Canada, you're a Canadian. Whatever nationality you take after your birth has to be applied for.

If his mother had wanted to save him from the clutches of the Motherland (which is why the Brits were pushed above the 49th parallel and allowed to remain under British rule), she should have crossed back over the border before she gave birth. To this day, anyone born north of the 49th parallel is a member of the Commonwealth. The Queen personifies the state and is the personal symbol of allegiance, unity and authority for all Canadians. Legislators, ministers, public services and members of the military and police all swear allegiance to The Queen. It is for this reason that all new Canadian citizens swear allegiance to The Queen of Canada.

Once you have sworn allegiance to the British Crown, the American constitution declares that you cannot become President of the United States of America. Until Congress changes the constitution, if you are born in a Commonwealth country that swears allegiance to the Crown, you can forget about running for president.

Ted Cruz will likely try to change things to his advantage.

Laws can be changed, but I don't see either Schwarzenegger or Cruz as having the mass appeal that would be required to change this one.  As Shelagh pointed out, the concept is pretty well entrenced.

It would take something akin to a second coming of Christ - a candidate who had the complete support and approval of the entire US citizenry.

Neither of these men has that kind of charisma.

Cruz is senator because Texas Democrats were unable to come up with a viable opponent.  Give the Castro brothers another couple of years,

They were both born here.  They are highly qualified individuals who have that leadership quality.

Someone on a news channel pointed out that today, it would not be possible for a president to appoint his brother as Secretary of State.  At the moment? True, but give these twin brothers a little time.

New Jersey governor Chris Christie has a far better chance for the Republican candidacy.  He's much more of a centrist.  My democratic son and d-in-law, who live in that state, are both fans.

By 2016, I'm betting, the people will reject this extremist crap and vote for someone who will restore balance and cooperation.
