hasn't been affected by the govt. shutdown at all. In fact, it has had its best week ever. Was up over 300 pts a couple of days ago. All the tech stocks are flying. GOOG is up over 110 points right now.  Facebook, love it or hate it, has been a great stock for the past six months, too. Either jump on the wagon or sit on the sidelines and complain!

No freakin' idea. I don't think too much about it, because I make the wrong decisions when I do. When I just close my eyes and throw darts I do better. When we had that pullback a couple weeks ago I thought ah-ha! Now it comes! And waited for a great shopping spree. Never came. The stocks I was watching just roared back. Another missed opportunity, story of my life.

I keep thinking this is a sucker's rally, but while the stocks are flying I'll hold on, ready to jump off anytime.

Original point being we can all bitch about the "elite" but unless we take some of the risks they do (excluding the trust fund babies), we'll forever be sitting here, well, bitching about them. Instead, throw some money at the Wall Street dartboard. Ride Google and Facebook up like the elite do.

Thanks.  I don't have the means to get involved, but it does seem that WS has a feel for the pulse of the country

Right now, I'm in a fog with the latest political stuff.  It just seems like the investors know something the rest of us don't.

Not bitching - just curious

We're ALL in a "fog" about the political stuff, the latest and not so latest. We're not told the real reason or story for anything. That's why I really don't waste my time with lengthy political posts, reading political boards, getting involved in most political arguments. Our opinions mean nothing, we don't know the real score, and we're just flapping our jaws talking about it the same way the sports nuts flap their jaws giving their two cents on sports radio stations.

I try to stick with things I have more control over, like stock purchases. Even then, I really don't have control because there's a lot of manipulation with that, too, but it's the best I can do. I've done well with some stocks over the years, enough to outpace my losses, and it's a more constructive way to spend time, I think, then bitching about politicians and politics.

Not to imply that you or anyone else was bitching about them, just saying.

I haven't a red cent to invest.  I wish I did.  My income is limited more than even in my youth.  It's shocking because I am working all the time.  I wish I had been selected by someone for full-time employment - I came close, but someone must have told my real age or they found it in the transcripts.  I don't know how people hide their age when the form's required boxes include, "high school graduation:  name of high school, date graduated, major"  and the same for colleges.  I have applied for many appropriate jobs.  My references and network are either dead or retired.  No one for a hand up.  As an older women, it's the death knell for employment.  Men keep in touch better with their golfing buddies and also have more debts on which to collect.  When you're a straight shooter like me, no one owes me anything and no one sees me in a position to provide them any favors.

You would probably benefit from retooling at the community college. I know lots of people who have done that.

Dear Diane,

This week, a person who owns most of the land  down the road, ( 6000 acres) waved my David over.  He stopped because this person had come to our hyroponic farm and visitied with us both for more than an hour.  He talked of the beauty of okra, peas and other vegetables.  He was, before he left, one of the people who knew about what vegetables are and could relate to the growing of them.

But, when my David pulled over to converse, this person, who lives less than a mile from us, could not remember his visit to our farm.  What he remembered was that David worked for Sun City Center.

Ah Ha! he had remembered that my David has charge of equipment that he may need.  He did not remember us at all, only that he could use David's connection for his gain.  we are talking about a farmer who, if you look him up, makes 10 million a year.  He wanted a free trencher.  I do believe that is how the rich deal.

They are elders in the local church.

Love Betty

That all sounds great, but if its not doing you any good, retooling into something else is needed. I know people with great credentials and over 50. Couldn't get anything, and after two years of unemployment, could barely get interviews. Went back for certifications in Health IT, a hot field, as is anything in health care. Got contract jobs, and then permanent jobs at places like Cerner. Their past experience in unrelated fields helped land the jobs, but the new certification in a hot field, and the short, accompanying employment in it, is what made them marketable.

Congrats on the no-smoking!

LC and Joe, you are correct about health care, I could get a minimum wage job helping older people with day care.  I am not suited for health care hands on.  I could do billing and work at a senior facility.  I have applied.  There are many in the local area - and they hire young to be with the old folks.  Guess they believe the youth have more energy.

I haven't given up.  I keep applying.  As they say in real estate - it only takes one buyer.  I had a great interview for contract work but it fizzled after I filled out the detailed ap.  My appearance is younger than my chronological age.

Remember, I was a vocational rehabilitation administrator, including case work.  I am very familiar with health care, physicians, billing, medicare, medicaid etc.  I set up the Vocational Rehab case management data software system for my region. I testified in court.

Joe, if only my child could follow in your footsteps.  The job requires no smoking and it starts in two weeks.  It is one of those around the clock jobs with zero smoking and no place to smoke.  They only hire non-smokers.

Health IT isn't a min wage job helping old people. It's information technology. Patient records, internal hospital paperwork, is all being digitized. Health IT trains people how to install, troubleshoot, and train hospital staff how to use the software. The people I know who got certified -some over 50, and one 60 yr old- got jobs with recruiters who hired them for lucrative contract work (lots of plane travel involved) and some segued it into full time great jobs with companies who make the software.

Btw, I don't care if the thread is hijacked, I don't own it, and the alternative is usually no posts.
