| If any of you here, members or guests, have read my book, A Myth in Action: The Heroic Life of Audie Murphy, or who know of this true American Hero and what he has done for his country, not only during WWII, but after, throughout his relatively short life, please consider responding to the following email request. You do not have to be a Texan. You do not even have to reside in the USA. If you want to know more about Audie Murphy, the URL for the website is http://www.audiemurphy.com The email stands for itself: - Richard Rodgers Audie Murphy Memorial Website wrote:
- DESPITE OVERWHELMING WORLDWIDE SUPPORT …
------------------------------------------------------ In early May 2013 many of you, regardless of the state or country you live in, supported an issue before the 83rd regular session of the Texas State Legislature concerning awarding the Texas Legislative Medal of Honor to World War II hero and movie star Audie Murphy.
In fact, a staff worker for the Texas Speaker of the House, Joe Strauss, told the organizers of this effort “it was the most responsive issue that I have ever seen in my entire time working in the legislature. We had correspondence and calls from Europe, Africa, and even Tokyo … amazing!”
You can be proud of this. Even still, the Texas Governor failed to endorse the action.
----------------------------------------- GOVERNOR PERRY FAILS TO SIGN BILL ----------------------------------------- Despite the many promises made to us by the elected officials of Texas, Governor Rick Perry through oversight allowed the legislative action to expire by not signing the bill before the legislature adjourned.
--------------------------------------------------------- NEW YORK TIMES REPORTS TEXAS GOVERNOR'S GOOF --------------------------------------------------------- To the embarrassment of Governor Perry, the political error captured the attention of a well-known journalist and author. An article on the bungling of the has been published by the New York Times and many other news agencies (see link below).
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/21/us/audie-murphy-a-texas-hero-still-missing-one-medal.html?_r=0
---------------------------- AWARD DEAD UNTIL 2015? ---------------------------- Unfortunately, according to Texas law, the issue is dead for 2 years until 2015 unless the issue is addressed in a special legislative session. Fortunately, the legislature IS in special session at this time.
------------------------------------------------------------ CALL AND EMAIL GOV. PERRY ON MONDAY, JUNE 24, 2013 ------------------------------------------------------------ The special session of the Texas Legislature convenes again on Monday morning, June 24, 2013 at 9 a.m. Central Standard Time. Timing your phone call is important.
If the phone is busy, try again. You can also try Governor Perry’s Senior Advisor and Chief of Staff’s, Brandy Marty phone number (see the bottom for contact info).
Emailing the Governor can be done immediately. A link to the Governor’s web-based email contact form is provided too but will require a U.S. address to use. People who reside outside the U.S. should use the regular email address provided (also below).
-------------------------------------------- TALKING POINTS TO MAKE ON THE PHONE -------------------------------------------- Respectfully say that you support the following …
1) That the award of the Texas Legislative Medal of Honor to Audie Murphy needs to be awarded by the Governor to the agenda of the Special Legislative Session.
2) That newly filed Senate Resolution 5, dated June 20, 2013, which directs the Governor to award the Texas Legislative Medal of Honor posthumously to Audie L. Murphy, be acted upon immediately without delay or excuse.
3) That voters, military veterans, and friends world wide think this issue cannot be delayed any longer without further embarrassment to the Governor and the State of Texas.
Please let Governor Perry’s office know where you are from too. If you are from Texas, say so. If you are from other parts of the world, say so. Worldwide support for this issue can mean worldwide embarrassment or praise to Governor Perry and the Texas Legislature depending on whether they can fix the problem they alone created.
-------------------------------------------- SUGGESTED COPY/PASTE EMAIL MESSAGE -------------------------------------------- Please make sure you include your name and address at the very end before using this message …
Dear Governor Perry:
It has come to my attention that Senator Van de Putte has filed SCR5 that directs the Governor of Texas to posthumously award the Texas Legislative Medal of Honor to Audie L. Murphy.
I fully support this resolution and ask that you immediately sign this bill without excuse or delay.
Because of the recent failure to award this decoration to Audie Murphy, this issue has gained national prominence, and arguably, worldwide attention.
The easiest and most expeditious solution to this problem is to honor the intent of SCR5 and bestow the Texas Legislative Medal of Honor to Audie L. Murphy, America’s and Texas most decorated combat soldier.
As the epitome of the American soldier for over 70 years, awarding this medal to Audie Murphy honors all veterans regardless era, state of residence, or political affiliation. It also honors the countries he fought to liberate and free.
Thank you for attention.

------------------------------- THANKS AND MORE TO COME ------------------------------- As always, thank you for your support in this effort. The organizers of this effort, will keep everyone informed of its outcome. We already have the assurance from the press that a follow up to this unfolding story will be given.
Sincerely Yours, Richard Rodgers

| The original petition was sent out to the legislature and the governor's office . The legislature acted on it and sent it to Perry, who basically ignored it.
This is the step to take now:
Please let Governor Perry’s office know where you are from too. If you are from Texas, say so. If you are from other parts of the world, say so. Worldwide support for this issue can mean worldwide embarrassment or praise to Governor Perry and the Texas Legislature depending on whether they can fix the problem they alone created.

| Highlight the letter, copy it to Word, and work from there. It's all I know to suggest. |

| Whatever politics underlie this issue, i support any and every effort to recognize this humble man of unparalleled valor and heroism. Because I am not familiar with the specifics and suspect there is more to the issue than meets the eye, I substituted my own email which reads in relevant part:
I am not a Texan, though all of us who love freedom and cherish liberty have, I believe, a little piece of Texas in our hearts. Audie Murphy is a true hero; None better defines the term nor better deserves the title. Our country has never needed such icons more. Whatever political or practical roadblocks stand in the way of recognizing this most worthy American, please work to surmount it. He is deserving of no less as he never gave less than his all. |
