New York:

Here is the case for stiffer penalties. A man spent 17 years incarcerated for killing his grandmother.

He,with an assault weapon, killed two firefighters and injured two more before killing himself.

Obviously, he was not reformed.

Reformed or unreformed, sane or insane, mentally sound or mentally ill, it all comes down to politics:

"West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin has always proudly touted his NRA A-rating, but he quickly declared that the Newtown shootings 'changed me',

What this politician is trying to say is that previously, because he saw votes to be gained, he supported gun ownership.

And now, because he sees votes to be gained, he has changed his mind."

Sad but true.

He was not a gentleman, to say the least. He beat his 92 year old grandmother to death.
Scary!

Only In America!

We wonder what to do?

The answer is easy. Don't let people like this out of jail--ever.

New York and Chicago already have the toughest anti-gun laws in the country. How's that working out for them?

In this case, not well.

This man was violent and received too short a sentence. He, of all people, should have been far from a gun.

Joe's idea of fining and jailing the supplier is great.

There must have been no background check.

PostSubject: Ban kitchen knives!   Hello, Not Wise! EmptyFri Dec 28, 2012 4:19 pm

<< The researchers say legislation to ban the sale of long pointed knives would be a key step in the fight against violent crime. "The Home Office is looking for ways to reduce knife crime. We suggest that banning the sale of long pointed knives is a sensible and practical measure that would have this effect." >>

Soon the nanny state will have us eating with plastic utensils, like on airplanes. Of course the same people who find the guns will also find the knives.

The knives are scary, but at least the assailant has to be near you to cause you any grief.

It is clear to me that defectives are a greater threat to society than guns, knives or trains. The current conversation completely misses the point. As long as this elephant in the room (defectives roaming the streets because it's against their civil rights to force them into institutions) isn't addressed, the wrong prescriptions will continue to be written.

Well, here's a cheery story from the sunny state of Florida!

http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2012-12-27/news/os-jerry-tyson-stabbing-mcdonalds-20121227_1_prison-officials-mentally-ill-inmates-tyson-and-douglas

If the wheelchair guy had a gun, do you think he would have been able to protect himself? Or would the gun have been taken away, with a worse outcome for him? Do you think anybody ever identified the perp as defective?

LC,

One fourth of all people suffer from a mental illness at some time in their life
Clearly, they are not all dangerous. Some are.

Defective, when used as a noun is offensive. You are a teacher. Do you use this terminology in school?

I use it to describe people like this.

You are muddying the waters when bringing up people with nonviolent mental illnesses. BTW, no guns involved here...

I would refer to her as a violence prone, mentally ill person.

She should not be around guns or knives or children or the disabled:)
