| 12/4/2012 I dropped Walmart for a very serious reason, I read a long article on how Walmart will drop it's health insuance, have all employees become part time , 24 hrs a week, under Obama Care these employees will be eligable for Medicaide and the states will have to pay for it, it almost made me throw up ! So from now on I'm shopping at Target ! What is your opinion ? This to me is a disgrace !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here's the article, it starts in January 2013 http://now.msn.com/walmart-reportedly-plans-cuts-to-employee-health-insurance Cheers.Joe.... |

| In this case, I agree with you Joe that Walmart is not a company that treats its employees well, not anywhere in the world. I saw a documentary on its behavior in foreign countries and its rape of small community economies. Unfortunately, I need their cheaper prices although I don't buy much there, only a few things that are major cheaper....however, by carefully watching sales, I may be able to do as well elsewhere.
I have a membership in Sam's Club that I share with my mom in Michigan. It' renews in April. Before then, I am going to switch to Costgo which I understand has a CEO who takes care of employees and is a person of ethics who gives back in gratitude for his success. That's the company with whom I wish to do business.
For those who live on the edge, Walmart's low prices make it possible to survive - clothe and feed their families. However, though my income is low, so are my needs. With planning, I can meet them as frugally elsewhere or do without. I am tired of the CEO excesses and bonuses while people below are kept on part-time wages and wicked schedules to benefit the store but not the employees. Though they can't live on Walmart wages, their crazy schedules make it difficult to do anything else to earn money or go to school.
K-Mart and Sears now have the same owners. K-Mart sometimes has good prices. Sears employees are happy; but K-mart employees are treated similarly to WalMart - part-time hours with no security or benefits on a crazy schedule. They always are hiring...

| 12/4/2012 DK.... I suspect Kohls will do the same thing, their all the same breed of cats. They we're suppose to build a Costco here not far from the new Walmart, nothing yet ? At Target if you get their Charge Plate they give you back 5% back on your sale, check it out, I already applied and will get their card soon...I've been in retail for 30 years before I retired and I just can't believe how employees are being treated.... http://www.target.com/c/why-target/-/N-5q0fx#?lnk=HEROCONTAINER|HEROCONTAINER&intc=851062|null Cheers..Joe... |

| 12/4/2012 Read an article last night that Costco won't be opening a store here because the land that's available is in the same area as the new Walmart, the head of Costco realestate said he wouldn't open a store near there even if you gave the land away........ Cheers..Joe... |

| Interesting comments, and I agree. Conditions stated are part of the reasons that in some European countries there are strict standards/guidelines for employer/employee conditions. In the West they call it Socialism. If you take away the label you may have a different outlook. Employee benefits, especially with provisions for healthcare and retirement, working hours, etc., are stipulated. Without government intervention and control, some employers, like Walmart, will not care for their employees. Having been an employer in Germany, I know the requirements of this country and not familiar with other European countries, although I believe they are similar for those that belong to the European Union.
Years ago when I worked for IBM, I remember how they took care of their employees with great benefits. The employees had a strong allegiance to the company that cared for them. There was never a strike at IBM. Where there are Strikes, it is open for suggestion that there is inequity in some form. |

| Unfortunately, many businesses operate that way, especially today in this down economy when people are begging for work.
Even in a good economy, I worked for a company that had me write a manual that so clearly defined each employee's tasks that they could be fired and replaced on the spot without skipping a beat - that was how I was "laid off," on the spot without skipping a beat - a cost-cutting measure.
Most of the places where I have worked as an administrator when you are laid off or fired, that is your last day and generally you get a week or two severance but are walked out the door and all computer codes changed immediately. There's no delay. They are too afraid of disgruntled employees doing something to the computers.
People are considered expendable when so many are in line for the jobs. |

| 12/6/2012 I read as of today Citigroup will lay off 11,000 employees, the employees always get the kick in the rear because a company isn't making a profit ! Cheers....Joe... |

| And the executives whose fault it is will walk away with $multi-million bonus checks for their failures and be hired quickly by another business in the industry through their golf club. |

Cheers.Joe... Since jobs are hard to come by now, employees need to be careful. The worker would have been better off to try to do the requested task and then ask for help. Saying. "I won't do it." is insubordination. Unemployment benefits are not granted in such cases. |

| I agree Alice. As a former employer, if an employee refused to to a task, he/she would be history. In today's economy, one can be glad to have a job. To become arrogant is not a good trait for job security. |

| I remember years ago trying to help a young mother get a job. I finally got her an interview with personnel at the county. I explained what she should wear - solid clothes that matched with non-scuffed shoes and her hair neat, etc.
She showed up at my office first in very clean coveralls with rhinestones and a white t-shirt under (the best clothes she had).
She had to go to the interview - and amazingly she talked him into hiring her. A few days later, she was back in my office.
"He kept hurrying me to get the files from the cabinet and I couldn't find them; finally, after he bugged me one time too many I told him to find his own f.............. file. I guess he didn't like it because I don't work there anymore."
I worked in a disgusting environment for six years that destroyed my lungs. People work in terrible environments to pay their bills. I should have quit and starved rather than face my future of decreasing lung capacity.

| Sad situation. I know that can happen. Working is not easy.
I had a wonderful boss, but once he missed the mark. I was in the midst of a root canal which blew up on me. I was in agony. I called in and asked if I had to be at work. The boss replied," We need you Alice."
I drove in with a stomach full of codeine and began working. When the boss arrived, I ran to the bathroom and heaved. The horrified boss said Go Home -NOW!
That never happened again |

| DK, Can you get compensation for your ruined lungs? Get a lawyer and see. Many of them will take a case on contingency. It sounds like you have a very just cause. Were others lungs damaged also? Class action suit. You may know riches again. |

| No. Florida has laws about lungs because of so much mold in the state. You can't collect until you are dead and they can use a slice of your lung to prove how it was damaged....
I worked on grants that were usually one to three years in duration. therefore, I had many bosses over the years. Of course the one place I worked the longest was the worst because of the bats, the asbestes and the toxic mold. |

| Florida sounds a bit backward. Bats, asbestes and toxic mold? Move out of that state. They even have trouble counting their votes! |
