I remember reading that Iceland was in severe trouble.

This story I don't remember hearing, have to do more sesearch.

I wonder what would happen if they try that here ?

Nationalization can be effective. The problem is the resistance against any form of government control.
When our government wants to place controls on banks and Wall Steet, it is resisted by big business. With their power to control and influence, change is difficult. Although people have the power with their vote, we have seen that they often vote for the things that are harmful to them. The build-up for our next election is already showing how money and power will influence the vote.

You can't educate people who don't want to be educated.
