| What a bunch of political stupidity. This is where I agree with you, Joe. Let's have a "no confidence" vote and turn out those politicians whose usefulness is only for their own gains and not for the benefit of their constituencies.
While we are eliminating the politicians without merit, let's end the reign of the lobbyists, the main source of information for the career politician. Let's put people in office who look to their constituents for information and do their own actual research into the facts of the matters.
The costs of starting and ending are astronomical - for the purpose of a "political message."
I repeat: Now is not the time to cut the budget. Every cut ends jobs. The country has enough people unemployed. Cut the budget when we have growing employment. In the meantime, research those areas where cuts will not negatively impact employment and be prepared to make cuts in the future; just don't make them now. |

| Now, there's a position with which I can agree. The problem is that the salary is such a small amount of the benefits for continued public office. They have book deals, public speaking engagements, and perks that are "hidden." Then there's the high end medical benefits that make certain they have the best of medical care for their lifetimes for them and their families at no cost to them; and then there's retirement. They also have the perks of entitlement - the treatment they receive by simply being elected to office - their staff, their security, the best hotels, the best travel arrangements, the best schools for their children - they live in the upper atmosphere, untouched by the lives of the real people they are supposed to represent. That lifestyle is worth maintaining - at all costs to integrity and without concern for the nation as a whole. |

| Well, they have the example of Wall Street - where the wealthiest continue to double their wealth and profits continue to soar with salaries and perks the highest they have ever been while the rest of the country suffers. Those in the thin air have no concept of those who suffer from their decisions.
All the cuts affect the common person; none have any impact on the wealthiest 1% - corporate subsidies, exceptions, off-shore relief, etc. etc. continue unfettered. The old boys club protects the wealth of the old boys and the lobbyists they serve. No one protects those whose incomes will be diminished, whose benefits will be a personal burden and who have nothing. |

| I say if the government shuts down, eliminate their (politicians responsible) pay entirely. Why should they be paid if no one else is? They need an incentive to get something beneficial done. Now they don't care.

| The only shutdown of government should be for the politicians. The workers need to get paid as mentioned by DK. I would like to see the politicians without pay AND WITHOUT BENEFITS. Then and only then will they understand what the average Amercian has to deal with. Many or our representatives are not representative of the people they are elected to serve. They have yet to experience hardship. Walking in the shoes of their constituents for a time would help. |

| So many of them are independently wealthy from their positions already and with family and wives also well-placed that non-payment of salary and benefits wouldn't even be felt. Some lobbyist would fill the gaps for them.... |

I believe something Ross Perot said many years ago, anytime Congress wants to pass a bill the public has to vote on it, that would stop them from spending$$$$ From all the stuff I read today, the public is very angry and I wouldn't be surprised you don't see riots in the streets , also I think the Govt. sucks because if they close down the military doesn't get "PAID!", these people are putting their lives on the line....
