| I feel for celebrities. Tabloids and the paparazzi won't leave them alone. You can never be sure if the stories you read about them are true or not.
Once you become famous, it seems you are fair game. I came across so much of this when I was researching for my book on Audie Murphy. The webmaster of the ALM Memorial Website (you have heard from him recently, indirectly. He's the teacher friend who was in Japan when the earthquake occurred) suggested I contact the family attorney, who was also director of the Audie Murphy Research Foundation. I overcame my intimidation and did contact her. I am so glad that I did. She was an invaluable help to me, and it even led to a couple of short notes from Murphy's oldest son, Terry who complimented me on being thorough with my research.
I learned from them how harmful tabloid journalism can be, and how seldom it is based on facts.
I don't know if this story about Ms Garten has any validity or not, but from my past experience, I would advise taking it with a grain of salt, and giving her the benefit of the doubt.

I've always believed if your famous and your contacted by such a great organization as Make A Wish I believe you should never, ever forget that it's the public who has made you famous....As I read many a year ago it's the public who can make you or break you..
Cheers..Joe |

Cheers..Joe A. We don't know the details of the contact. What right did Make-a-Wish have to make it public? What is her side of the story. B. The public doesn't make people famous. People become famous (or infamous) because of what they do. Celebrities have as much right to privacy as anyone. They don't owe the public anything. They are not required to give anything of themselves to anyone. They have the same freedom to choose as you or me. They are not public property. Ann |

| Guess we have different perspectives, Joe, and will just have to disagree on that one.

| Mixed feelings. A celeb does owe her public something. However, she probably receives a lot of requests. I think MAW was remiss in contacting her a second time. It was clear from the first turn-down that she wasn't interested, and they should have directed the boy's attention to someone or something else at that point.
Of course, it was obviously a boneheaded move in retrospect, and she could have worked it as a publicity stunt from the outset, but maybe she didn't feel that would be right, either. I don't think anyone should be shamed or pestered into doing something they don't want, celebrity or not. |

| 4/1/2011 LC.. Put it this way if it were me, I would want to help a child who is very ill, to me that would be more important than being a celebrity or a public figure, here this child admires you, we'll make his day and he would be the happiest person on this earth, this is my belief , you never forget where you came from and you always give back ten fold.......What is an hour or two out of your life to see the light shine in this child's eyes, you may make his last days his happiest.. Cheers..Joe.. |

| I agree. But I don't think it was an hour or two out of her life. I think they are in different cities, meaning there would be a lot of travel and prep time for her. It would probably take the better part of a weekend. Unless he could travel to her? It would still take more an an hour or two.
Not that I care about the bad press she's now getting. Her problem. |
