| DK, it isn't the diverse opinions that bother me. It is now, as it was before, a matter of attitude. You, Alice, Betty, Ann, and several others make this a good place, but still I don't know that it is a good place for me. |

As far as I'm concerned I'm through discussing this. There are better things to discuss than PA....Like World events, Photography, Art, What is DK up to ? How's Ann's famous cooking coming ? How's Al's new book coming along ? Is Abe okay ? Did LC get kidnapped and made into a cooking slave in China ? Is Shelagh going to create a new publishing empire? Will Alice write a new funny book ?
Cheers..Joe |

| What you need to do, Joe, is find a thread that isn't about PA and post on it, that way you don't have to worry about reading what's being said here. You got some good advice on this thread, it would be in your best interest to heed it. It's very easy not to read what is written here. When you come to the forum all you have to do is not click on this topic. There you go, got it solved for you. |

| Just to hijack the thread...I arose at 3:00 a.m. after very little sleep and drove to the Ft. Lauderdale Airport and back. I am exhausted! I have had company for quite a while and funny how quiet things are already. Now, I'm going to make up for the sleep I lost. Oh, it's a three hour plus a little round trip. |

| Sleep well, DK.
I lost some sleep myself, so I know how it feels. Last night, as I was writing at my bedroom desk, I heard a little electronic beep. I wondered what it was, and a few moments later, I heard another. After a third, I realized it was my smoke alarm. It wasn't the raucus, persistent sound the thing makes when there is a fire, just the little intermittent one that says its time to change my battery, please.
Drat, what a nuisance, I thought, but oh well, I went to the closet and got my ladder, set it up in the hallway, went to my battery drawer and found a 9-volt, so far so good. I have to admit, I don't change the things as often as I should. The older I get, the less I like climbing ladders, especially when it means working with my head tilted so far back I can focus on the ceiling. So it took me a bit to remember how to remove the sucker, especially since the ceiling is over my head, so I feel as though I am upside down, and my sense of direction goes haywire., and all the time, about every 15 seconds, I hear that beep.
But I managed to get it off. Now, how do I take the lid off the battery chamber. Oh, yes, push this thing here. Good. Take out the old battery, put in the new. Now close it. Um, doesn't want to close (beep) Try again. Still doesn't want to close. check the terminals, backwards? (beep) No. Try again. OK, closed. put it back in place (beep) Bummer. Take it off, open, take it out, try again. (beep) When did I buy this battery? Expiration date says 2012, but that might be the problem. Check the battery drawer. That was the last 9-volt. Bummer. Check the time. The corner Food Mart is still open. Get keys, get purse, go out. start car - at least I can't hear those bleeping beeps. Get a couple of batteries - long line at check out - Don't these people know it's too late to be out shopping?? Back home (beep)
Open package, re-climb ladder (beep). Try again. (beep) Check date on new battery - 2013. That's not it. Check direction of terminals again. Try to read the teeny print of instructions with my head upside down: Drop new battery into battery chamber.. Drop? How drop? Turn cover upside down (beep). Right side up? Drop battery . Snap lid shut. Wait for another bleeping beep. 15 seconds. No beep. 30 seconds. No beep. Replace alarm cover. No beep. I went to the bleeping store for no reason??? I am so out of synch with my head upside down I'm doing things bleeping backwards.
I stayed on the ladder another 30 seconds before it totally registered that the beeping had stopped. The thing was actually done. Elapsed time? 2 hours. Stiff neck. Pain going down my spine, I hobble down to the floor and move the ladder out of the way.
It took me a long time to get to sleep after I went to bed. I kept expecting the thing to start beeping again.
I still haven't put the ladder away.

Aw Phooey! Stay here. If we all agreed it would be sooooo boring. |

| Ann, I can sympathize with you even though I'm still laughing. Perhaps I'm feeling good knowing that I'm not the only one that have problems with fire detectors. Getting the thing to stop beeping is urgent. Getting the cover off without ripping the alarm off the wall is another cause for aggravation. A flashlight to read the fine print that is the same color as the alarm is yet another problem. Working in a hurry doesn't help either. I could picture it all happening as you so clearly described the event. Glad you were able to sleep and recover from the ordeal. |

| We should put my "People Wash" and your "Beep in the Night" together with a few more!
I could add a fire alarm story, too. I ended up with new ones and had the store put in the batteries. The former that I could not get the batteries out ended up thrown across the garage floor before they stopped beeping. Thus, new ones. |

| Maybe the next anthology should be Forever Mishaps. Stories of cooking, camping and DIY disasters, holiday howlers, sporting failures and bad hair days. |

Shelagh..
I like the idea, I have one about taking a trip many years ago with my brother and a few others to Virginia which turned into a disaster ! Or a few retail stories that would curl your hair..

| I like the idea of stories that cause laughter in the end, even if the laughter is at ourselves for our predicaments. |

Great idea, Shelagh. The only British effort to land a robotic spacecraft on Mars was the Beagle 2: It was, unfortunately, a bad hair day for me on that cold Christmas morning of 2003 when the live televised broadcasts failed to show neither a hide nor a hair of it. Had it really been swallowed up by a little green man? I could say much about it.. |
