| Emergency supplies. How many have supplies for an emergency? Years ago when we faced a nuclear threat from the Soviets, people were building bomb shelters. The shelters included survival items – a large portion being food stuffs. People who live in cities are at more risk. When the store shelves are empty, re-supply is not always possible. So what do people do? I think we should all be a bit more prepared for disasters. It’s too late once the disaster strikes. It might be good to make a list of things needed. Water and Food top the list. If power is suddenly cut off, do you have a portable radio with batteries? Do you have a pantry stocked with canned goods? What about bottled water? A First Aid Kit? And don’t forget candles. Some may want to include a gun to defend their food supply. |

I have a walk in pantry, try to keep it stocked. Prescriptions I have a plan at the pharmacy to fill for three months. Candles and an oil lamp.....Weapons I don't believe in....What kind of emergency are we talking about ? I don't think the radiation from Japan would hit this country ?
Cheers..Joe |

| I like our bedroom door locked also. Dave laughs at me and asks me, "Why/"
I answer, "Because I don't want to wake up with a creep in our room. If he has to fumble with the door, that will give us time to push the chest of drawers up to the door and dial 911." |

| Having been through two hurricanes and a number of tropical storms, there are some supplies that I always keep on hand:
Bottled water Canned meat/fish Canned beans and vegetables Duct tape (for taping windows - won't keep them from breaking but cuts down on shattering) Matches Candles Flashlight batteries Spare ice in freezer First aid kit & meds Portable radio
Trying to get these items after the storm/whatever hits is difficult and expensive. Keeping them stocked means one less thing to worry about.

| We have invested in a gasoline generator. We keep a supply of fuel for the tractors and other equipment. The generator will run the well and most of the house. David's grandfather built a bomb shelter back in the 60's. We could use that in certain emergencies. I can a lot of food. Beans and most vegetables. I do that for self sufficiency, but it works for emergencies, too. We have eggs by the dozens, thanks to Margaret and Reginald, Feeney, Sweeney, Hermine and Flo. Hogs and deer and wild turkeys fill the woods all around. My David knows how to use bows and guns of all kinds. We would not starve. In my childhood, starvation was a real possibility. I have tried to never have that be a possibility again. Not for anyone I know. David and I could supply most of Duette with vegetables and water if it was necessary. And most of Duette could supply meat from these woods for every citizen. Love, Betty |

| I usually get prepared for hurricanes I have a safe room, the laundry room, where I keep matches, a first aid kit, a crank radio, batteries, flashlights, a plastic raincoat, and then add to it nearer the hurricane warnings.
Recently, we had a boil water warning. It lasted for a week. I learned from experience that to include bathing, I need more water on hand. |

| It has been my experience that in catastrophic events people give every help that they can. It is no longer about the money, the status, the perfume of life. People want to help people. They need to help. That is what makes us human-kind. The thing about living is that it takes small bits to continue. Small bits of food, small bits of recognition, small bits of kindness, small bits of love. Most of us live on small bits doled out in our lifetime. Some people do not limit themselves to this small box, but give without reward, love for the joy of it, put their heart out there, and care willy-nilly. I would add to the emergency supplies we stash,a whole measure of human kindness. Love, Betty |

| Dear Alice, No, I have a good memory. I would not know about love if it had not been for people who loved me willy nilly when I was not loveable. Since then, I have practiced! Love, Betty |

| The Boy Scouts Motto: "Always be prepared" makes good sense.
Many older folk have experienced hard times and are better prepared than those who have not experienced hard times or a natural disaster. I believe in having a positive outlook and try to do that with my eyes wide open. Peace of mind is important. Being in a position to help others, as mentioned by Betty, is constructive. Love is powerful and can be expressed in many ways. |
