I am guilty.

It isn't easy. We are encouraged to answer posts, then ignored or put down when we do.
How should we react to contrarians.

If we ignore them they think us rude. If we try to discuss rationally, they refuse or change the subject.

Your ideas?

Thanks

Honestly, if someone is not 'big' enough to discuss things rationally, then they are not someone I would want their opinions on anything.

Dear Alice,

I am reminded of a poem that Mr. Toad of Wind in the Willows composed one lovely afternoon.

The world has held great Heroes,
As history-books have showed;
But never a name to go down to fame
Compared with that of Toad!

The clever men at Oxford
Know all that there is to be knowed.
But they none of them know one half as much
As intelligent Mr. Toad!
The animals sat in the Ark and cried,
Their tears in torrents flowed.
Who was it said, "There's land ahead?"
Encouraging Mr. Toad!
The army all saluted
As they marched along the road.
Was it the King? Or Kitchener?
No. It was Mr. Toad.
The Queen and her Ladies-in-waiting
Sat at the window and sewed.
She cried, "Look! who's that handsome man?"
They answered, "Mr. Toad."

Love,
Betty

Are you writing the paper or what?

I am interested in earthquakes--not the moon. THE MOON IS OF NO CONCERN TO ME IN A COVER UP OF THE CAUSE OF AN EARTHQUAKE. YOU ARE ALLEGING CRIMINAL INTENT.

Read what you are saying.

Quit threatening me with what NASA said. I am beginning to doubt they even wrote a report.

Just give me a link to it.

Ya people here like to cry about meanies and internet bullies yet have no problems launching personal attacks on posters who aren't in their little circle.

They have their own style but in the end, they're all hypocrites.

James,

It was dispicable!
Did you note my apology?

I am sorry I was not nice.
Could we start over?

Now, now , isn't the world in enough trouble ?
Peace on Earth, after all aren't we the same,
human beings, longing to belong, to be loved,
to help each other in time of need and crisis.

It's taken me a long time, but this is my opinion. Some differences of opinion are important to discuss. As long as the discussion is in the third person about facts or in the first person in terms of "I believe", I hang in. When it disintegrates to "you" and "you believe" and "you are" and then name calling, I simply walk away just as I attempt to do in real life. In real life, I say, "I'm sorry; this topic seems to be too emotional to continue discussing. We either need to change the topic or take a break. Then, if the other person continues heated, I say, "I'm sorry, I need to leave. Let's get together another time." I leave. I have just started to apply that method on forums.

I also try not to be offended when others attack on the forum. Nobody here really knows me. If there is a clique, it's very small and certainly is open to new members - the "clique" from my perspective is the entire posting group of people, those who have the courage to express and share their thoughts. Think about that: what a risk to put your words out there for all the world to see and take apart.

Some of you know how much fun Lane and I had.

We had a very ominous meeting.
On the PA board he made a very direct comment to someone and I barged in and said , "Which charm school did you graduate from?"

I thought that wasn't very nice. I apologized and we never had another cross word.

He emailed me faitfhfully durinrg my heart surgerry and I him during his awful cancer battle.

He was very funny and knew how to bury a hatchet deep.

Alice...

Look at it this way , many people have different opinions,
I've had mine, I never get mad, except maybe at LC and she admits
she loves to get under my skin ( I think she secretly likes me ) I've
had opinions with Abe and DK , I still like them for standing up for
what they believe in. So dear friend, have a cup of coffee, a cup of
tea, a glass of wine, relax, think of the many good friends you have
here. We should start a new thread, how to help the people of Japan
in their time of need.. I will post on my art site any funds I collect
from sales will go to the Red Cross to help the Japanese people..

Cheers..Joe

I already posted on my art site that I'm willing to give
all proceeds from my sales to The American Red Cross
to help the people of Japan in their hour of need. So
far other artists are going to do the same.

DISTASTEFUL CONDUCT! Empty
PostSubject: Re: DISTASTEFUL CONDUCT!   DISTASTEFUL CONDUCT! EmptyMon Mar 14, 2011 6:09 am

I learned a good lesson many years ago. I lived in a duplex where my landlord lived on the other side. She had made many unkept promises about painting and repairing my unit and we didn't speak though our front doors were two steps from each other. When we had to speak, it was unpleasant.

At 3:00 in the morning I had a medical scare and was so frightened I called my landlord, not knowing anyone else (I had only lived there a short time.) She was not only in my apartment in a flash, but she was kind and together we figured out the problem and didn't need 911.

Funny, but the peeling wallpaper and minor repairs no longer mattered. I fixed them. I started sharing the yard upkeep as well, not my responsibility. We were never friends; but we had an amicable, neighborly relationship and helped each other every now and then as neighbors do.

We all have much more in common than differences. Life is short and fragile. As many of you know I shared some words with Lane that I never had a chance to amend. Ah, the lessons of life.

DK,

Lane had the respect of those who knew him and that was what mattered to him.
He was diagnosed with terminal cancer and was dealing with combined chemo and radiation.

Don't feel quilty--he didn't want sympathy or pity.
