It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. We describe characters in our writing that form an image to the reader. In real life, we make judgments about a person based on a visual image, i.e., a photograph or Avatar. Those images are often misleading. Judgments I form about people are a combination of an image and the words they write. Often the words they write provide a more powerful image than the visual, however meeting a person can either confirm or change the image one forms.
Before I met Carol, I already had an image of a caring person based on her posts and the books she had written. When I met her, looked into her eyes, I saw a softness that confirmed the image I had formed.
I have often been wrong in forming impressions of people. Sometimes the visual image gives the impression of arrogance and the opposite is true. Sometimes the image gives the impression of kindness, and the opposite is true. In the absence of meeting someone in person, how do we know if our impressions are accurate? I think a more accurate image is through the words they speak via heir posts or books they have written.
Talking to someone, hearing their voice, even by telephone, helps.
I never met Dick in person, but talking with him by phone, confirmed my impression of him. He had a kind voice and was courteous with the words he spoke.

I have formed an opinion/image of Shelagh. I think the image I have is accurate, unless she were to destroy that good image if/when I meet her in person, but I don't think so.

I think it is the things we do, Abe, that matter the most; not the things we say or the way we look.

Yes, I agree. Actions do speak louder than words, however words are also actions. The act of responding to a post and what is expressed in that response says much.

I agree with what Abe has said. I know up until a few years
ago I was very shy and I mean shy ! When I worked for an
Industrial Film Producer in 1981 until she closed her office because
videotape took over I had to find another job. I got one at Macy's
in New York City, it's huge. I remember I totally became panicked
that I had to deal with hundreds of strangers, so I decided I would
pretend I was an actor , I was not me. It worked and over the years
I've become more and more open dealing with the public. I believe
through writing I have given a small part in the world, I hope I have
gotten people especially children to read, to me that's important. I
have made many friends through the old PA boards and have read
many great books by them. I was very touched by Carol's death , a
great lady who I have admired and on the same day I lost a great
friend of 42 years who was 97. I admire Shelagh greatly because of
her kindness and knowledge , Alice I loved reading her books and I
love her humor. Abe I admire because of his honesty and bravery
and his stories on Beirut. Dick I loved his website, his stories were
fascinating to me and I miss them. I try in my life to help other
people and especially animals which are my great love and through
my art and photography I donate to certain charities to help them
raise money for good causes. To me we are all one human race, all
striving for a goal, friendship, love and most of all peace on Earth..

Cheers..Joe

Shelagh is to be admired. She took a 'lickin' and kept on 'tickin' when she was attacked. Her perseverence showed much strength. She has also provided much assistance that is not always made public. She cares.

Abe..

I agree with you, Shelagh has always been an inspiration
for me , when ever I feel I can't find the answer, I know I can
always ask her. I've known her for 6 years and to me she is a
kind, brave soul ....

I appreciate the research Shelagh does to support comments by people on this forum. I read and post here because all the members have something special to offer. It would be great fun to have a "get-together."
