| The people whose unemployment has run out and are no longer counted as unemployed? Isn't that where the unemployment figures come from, the ratio of people filing and collecting unemplyment? Love, Betty |

| Let's see. If unemployment figures actually drop and businesses begin hiring people again, that has to be because the Republicans have been in charge of the Congress for - a couple months?
If these figures are really bogus for some esoteric reason, then of course it is the result of the Obama Administration policies that jobs are not increasing and unemployment is gaining.
Reality? Unemployment is bound to go down if businesses hire. People like me have already retired to save our mortgages. Discouraged people will eventually be working at something to eat since their unemployment runs out. So, even those who don't figure into the unemployment compensation figures will be smaller in number.
The scarey part is the Republicans hell bent on laying off more people from government as deficit reduction measures. Wake up. People spending money makes the GNP. No job (government or not) decreases GNP. Visionary governments create government jobs to have full employment. (Our government couldn't do much of that because the wars put us beyond the pale).
So if there's public sector lay offs for every business sector gain, the unemployment figures will stagnate. That's a win for the Republicans (looks like Dems can't produce jobs) and a loss for the nation. Games as us usual, our loss as usual. |

As I've said before , those who don't collect anymore aren't counted so the real figures are bogus a " LIE !" Their are more than 14.5 million un-employed. Then as I've read for the last 6 months those who are 62 are collecting their S.S. and those who are 55 to 61 are screwed because they can't collect S.S. This country is in deep you know what, it's all a political game !

| However, when they say the unemployment rate is lower, it is a real figure: the number of persons signing up for unemployment insurance is fewer; the number receiving it is fewer. That is a real number.
They can also survey those aged 62 and over who have collected Social Security to see if it was because they lost their jobs and could not get another. Pitifully, collecting early will mean less income the rest of their lives. However, a real number can be discerned from real people.
The number of jobs created is a real number. They have to file the IRS form for employees and many other. Of course, what we are not hearing (and it is also a real number) is the average wage for those newly created jobs.
Another number we are not hearing is the actual wage received by those who have returned to the work place and no longer receive unemployment insurance. Anyone I know who was unemployed returned to a smaller paycheck.
Another very real number is food stamps. What is the increase in food stamp applications indicating no employment and no unemployment insurance. That will give a partial picture of the "discouraged" group.
The wealthier "discouraged" group is more difficult to fathom. I would look at house payment delinquencies, bankruptcies and foreclosures for some evidence that the discouraged group is becoming smaller. I don't think and exact figure is possible; however, a scale for higher and lower might be established.
I have my own measure. It's called the classified ads and Career Builder. When a job passing out samples at Sam's Club is called an "Event Coordinator," people with B.A. degrees and lots of experience still can't find a job. When the majority of job ads are for commission jobs selling everything from make up to insurance, there's a problem. When schools don't need substitute teachers, there's a problem. |
